    some more pics.

i've massive amounts of clearance (in prado terms) from the UCA to the side of the tyre.

    i have the UCA's as well as a 0 offset 17x8 rim.

next mod will be changing the front struts out for some longer units to allow for the extra travel the new UCA's have unleashed. probably along the lines of some custom length billies, as they have a floating coil seat in which height can be dialled in to the nearest 5mm with the option of moving the circlip as well as machining new grooves if needed.

i will see how the 285's fit 1st, i may not need the extra height yet. i will also need to work out some custom length rear billies to compliment the front. i have a 30mm coil spacer to go into the rear as well as a 4" extended stainless braided brakeline.

also, when the UCA's are set at the default position, it provides 2 degrees of positive castor. when checked with the wheel alignment machine, i had about 4 degrees on the left and about 3 degrees on the right as a rough number. there is no way the std set up can allow this much positive castor with acceptable camber.

i have a lot of castor at the moment, which means the Prado tracks straighter a lot better, but it also means heavier steering. i may knock some castor off next time i get a chance to wheel align it. i think about 3.5 degrees on the left with a degree of split will be on the money.

So the new UCA's only give you more flex yeh? Don't change lift? IFS confuses me

flex is another term for wheel travel.

in order to gain more wheel travel over standard, a longer shock or strut is required. if too long a shock or strut is used at a standard height, you risk bottoming the shock out.

if you are after more height, a longer shock and strut is needed as well. if you gain height without longer shocks or struts, you risk topping out, or running out of shock stroke.

lift is governed by the springs only. the spring movement is dampened or controlled by the shock/strut.

if you lift your car too much, one of the limiting issues apart from the strut on the front, are the ball joints in the lower and upper arms. the upper arm more so. it is possible to lift or fit long enough travel suspension to max out the angle or movement in these ball joints.

also, excessive lift can create a world of hurt in the wheel alignment department, and if the ideal setting can not be dialled in, your car will not drive 100%, or it may react in an unexpected way in a sudden brake and swerve scenario, or it can wear tyres un-evenly or prematurely.

the new UCA increases the amount of travel of the upper balljoint (as it has been replaced), which results in a larger wheel travel range, as well as allowing +/- 4 degrees of adjustment in castor and camber. this also allows the lower arms to be andjusted so the wheel is brought forwards, allowing a larger tyre to be fitted with consistent wheel alignement specs dialled in.

any interest for a group buy for these UCA's?

i can organise a group buy of about 5 minimum, but i will need a couple more days to confirm a price delivered to your door.

this is only an EOI to see if this is worthwhile doing at all, or if people are willing to just buy online from the states. i know it all depends on the final price.

there's not much you can't do with these UCA's. google Toytech UCA's, and people are using them on 120 series platforms, such as 4th and 5th gen 4runners, prados, hilux's, FJ cruisers, tacoma's and tundra's.

                          • Re: SIK-120 : Steve's 08 D4-D

                            just a small update.

i finally got my pyro gauge. its one of the digital read out types. i originally had the autometer round 52mm pyro and boost gauge, but decided against it, as the gauges didn't really fit in well inside the the Prado.

i looked through all the eBay gauges, and 99% of them are GHEY or cheap looking. i wanted something compact, and not sticking out in the middle of nowhere.

the unit seems to be a 'powerful' unit in the way of versatility. its super small, well put together with a high quality finish and fit. just reading through the settings etc, and also nights of research, this small unit can be programmed to suit 101 applications and all that is needed is the correct input sensor and correct setting up.

there is also another unit basically identical, but measures pressure, as in boost, MAP etc. i was looking at getting this as well to monitor boost, but i thought I'd try the Pyro version 1st. if the pyro works good, i will invest in the boost gauge version.

you can wire in a buzzer to sound if it reads over your set value, or it can open and close a relay to turn accessories on or off. i have the steinbauer chip, which i may hook the gauge up to turn on and/or off automatically. plus, it looks heaps better than the chip it/ebay ones. the red number display can also be wired into lights so it dims at night.

this is what i ended up with...

                            the enclosure for surface mounting

                            front

                            back

                            side

in the enclosure (clip in style)

the thermocouple (i have limited clearance around the dump on my beaudesert system)

Check out the manufacturer and all the other gear they have.

i will be flush mounting the gauge, and not using the enclosure. i find the enclosure quite bulky, but then again, you need a fair amount of room under the surface considering the depth needed.

i will try and get it all in over the week end and put some pics up.

the sensor i got was only 2m. i thought this would be enough, but it is actually too short for where i have mounted the gauge.

i have a 4m sensor in its way, and i will get pics up when its all installed.

the coolant hose above the dump pipe bung is a PITA!!! i didn't have to remove it, but it was a small mission trying to fit the sensor.
