  • Spoony's 04 GXL Turbo Diesel

We bought our Prado last weekend. Haven't done anything to it yet (apart from drive it and give it a bath) but I thought I'd start a build up topic in anticipation of what is to come 8)

It is a 2004 GXL Tubro Diesel manual with 113,000kms on the clock.

Accessories that we bought it with include:
    ARB deluxe bar
    Safari snorkle
    Uniden UH-012 UHF radio
 ARB compressor mounted under bonnet
 Dual batteries with monitor mounted in cabin
 Hayman Reese Electric brake controller
 Rear poly air bag suspension
    Toyota roof racks
    Toyota tow bar

Here's a couple of photos ... hooked up to the back is the new camper trailer that we bought of Leachy ... it's going to get a tent and a few other mods but that's for another thread.

            Hey Spoony,
Nice rig and good to see it came with some extras. A quick question though as i seriously cannot make up my mind and dont have squillions to spend, how do you find the older motor, before they changed it in 06?
I am just asking around as I am tossing up weather to spend the bit extra and try and find a reasonably priced D4D or go with the older model. Any fors and againsts would be great.

Look forward to seeing more pics when you get out and about.

Hiya Spoony, nice looking rig there mate. My Mrs would have loved to have gotten that colour and I would have loved to have gotten one loaded with those mods when we bought ours... Well done!

The WA contingent just keeps growing.

Here in Perth, these things were like hen's teeth second hand (I found only 3 manual diesels in my price range (around the $35,000 mark) for sale in the 2 whole months I was looking). Lucky for me this one was in pretty good shape. At that price, the only D4D's available were ones that had come off the mines and I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole with another barge pole tied to it ... they were absolutely trashed. Obviously the D4D motor has more get up and go but I figure with the coin I saved on buying the older motor, I can do things like exhaust, chip and gas and be in the same ball park as the D4D guys and probably be even or slightly ahead in the $ stakes.

Personally, I am quite happy with it ... it ain't ball tearing, but it's a 4x4 and is never going to win any land speed records ...

... oh and the wife is happy, and when the wife is happy, I am happy

                  Thanx Spoony,
My thoughts on the subject about mine vehicles exactly, and like you i am no lead foot. I may have to have a look at some older models and see what i like and dont like.
                  Have fun in your wagon.

I agree with these sentiments exactly!

When we were looking for ours we spent the best part of four months to find a TD GXL Auto that wasn't an ex miner and it had to be white or grey (could only get white) and that was a few years ago so there should be a few more on the market now but there doesn't seem to be?

As far as getting a bit more oomph and keeping up with a D4D, well there are a number of options. We have just had the exhaust done by MANTA and I can thoroughly recommend their system. Heaps more kick now with the 3" and just as quiet as stock so the Mrs is happy!! Have a look at the system here http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6616 it's made a huge difference.

Ahhh, yes, that old say of ..........Happy wife = Happy life..........

Nice looking rig mate. And with the extras too.

I know 2 x guys looking for D4Ds at the moment, just cant get them. Our Toyota dealer down here hasnt had a Prado on the lot for ages.

I understand what you say about the Mining Prados. We have quite a few, but while they dont always scrub up too well, they do get serviced every 2 or 4 weeks, depending on their duty. But then, Im probably not going to buy one of our vehicles either.
                            Cheers

It's been a while since I've done anything to the old girl (except the 12V outlets in the back for the fridges) so on Tuesday it goes in for a new set of boots (265/70R17 Mickey Thompson ATZ 4-ribs) and then on Thursday it goes for a set of Bilstein springs and shocks all round. Will report on how it goes with a few piccys
