    Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

    Thanks Darren,

I had to ring the guy who fitted it and ask, he tells me it is made from a front windscreen rubber for a BA falcon, apparently they buy this in large rolls from an aftermarket supplier. he trimmed a lip of which is on the inside so you can’t see it, and then added double sided tape to one side so it stays put. Honestly it looks neat as! I am very happy with the result but of course only time and rough roads will truly test it out over the long run.

    Cheers Andrew

      Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

Cheers Andrew, thanks for the heads up.
Mine seems to be fitted pretty secure, just the little gap underneath is annoying.
Just did some pretty rough tracks in Tassie recently, and no movement at all from the scoop.
See how it goes in Simpson mid year.
      Thanks Darren

Hi Darren, yours sounds exactly like mine after the first fit up, that gap just made it look a bit tacked on. Mine seems very solid as well. Judging by your signature your rig has all the good bits on it already.

        Cheers Andrew

Well I’ve had a few hold ups on the sliders but they are half done, I have fitted a rhino roof rack which I will post some photos of when I get a chance to take a few shots, I’ve bought a new ARB fridge which means I will need to make a new slide (drop down for my vertically challenged wife) I am 6'2" so don’t really see the need for it to drop and I should be finishing the dual battery install instead of being on PP. but I will get that done after tea. The easiest and cheapest mod of all cost $3.50 and around 1 minute to install.

              Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

Here are a few Photos of the new Rhino rack. It is an AT1510, 1500mm x 1010mm, the cross rails are Rhino heavy duty 1375mm long and the shovel holders and conduit either side.
The clamps for the conduit must be sold mostly in places like Iraq and Afghanistan as on my receipt they are called (this cracks me up) "Bazooka Brackets".
Now that is not what I was originally going to carry there, BUT after thinking about it, you find a tree fallen over the track, "don’t worry honey leave the axe in the back ill just grab the Bazooka" noisy neighbors at camp "no problem" I could go on but instead i might have to go and check fleabay and see what I can pick up

                  Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

                  Thanks Tinkera,

The shade cloth is 90%. When you do cover yours make sure you put something soft between the frame and the shade cloth, I used the black foam that is normally used for insulating copper pipes. If you just put the cloth hard against the frame the stones will cut it to pieces in the first day.

I have been working on a set of sliders, still a bit of work to go.
Here are the mounting brackets, (LH rear not done yet)

Checking the main rail for length.

Shaped the end to fit the outer rail.

                  Outer rail fitted

                  And a couple of braces

The RHS slider all fitted up

All I have to do is make the LH rear mounting plates and then weld the supports on, then fold up some alloy tread plate for a bit of bling and take the sliders to get powder coated.
I will post some more photos when I have the finished product.

                  Cheers Andrew

HI Andrew Thanks for the reply and the heads up on the foam when I saw yours I thought it was made out of pipe or is it and covered in foam also having a closer look now have you covered both sides :?: I was only going to do one side anything I,am missing here you,ve probably done rougher tracks me :?: Does it cut where the shade cloth raps around the frame I was wondering if I put double sided foam on the frame on the front then lay shade cloth on top,if it would do the same job :?: Sorry about all the questions but I only want to do it once.CHEERS TINKERA.

                      Re: AJ120s 2009 D4D and camper trailer

                      Hi Tinkera,

The frame is made out of 38mm x 25mm RHS, the shade cloth which the upholsterer sewed up whilst doing the tent, slips over the frame like an envelope so you can’t see any of the frame once it is on. it has a series of eyelets at the bottom that have cable ties to hold it in place, these however don’t last to well and I think I will lace some rope through there before my next trip. as to what you use, if you get a piece of shade cloth and lay it over whatever your frame is and hit it a heap of times with a hammer, trying to simulate a rock, and see how long it takes to cut the cloth. Hard on steel I would suggest one or two hits and you will see damage. I had this set up on my last CT and towed it to Cameron’s corner, across the Tanami twice, the Oodnadatta track and the Gibb river Rd plus other assorted short trips and it stood up to it no worries.

I will try and take some close up photos on the weekend and post them up (to dark now)

Here is a photo of what happens if you don’t put something soft in between the shade cloth and the frame, this is my old CT (I have built more than one) and this was my first attempt at a stone guard, most of the damage happened on the first day on the Oodnadatta track. It’s the old Prado also.

                      Cheers Andrew

A bit more progress on the sliders

                            LHS first fit up

And some tread plate for a bit of bling

Next stop is the powder coaters, hopefully they should be bolted up and finished by next weekend.

Slight change of plans on the powder coating, was quoted 400 bucks to do them both  . That was a bit rich so it looks like a good old fashioned coat of paint on the weekend.
