  • Gino’s 120 Series GX 3L TD Build

    Hi Crew,

I’m relatively new to 4x4ing . . . I’ll be honest I’ve been a V8 ute man, but racing motocross I finally had succumb to the pressure and get a 4x4 (I’d had enough of near on ripping my exhaust at the first sight of a gravel road).

Not knowing if I was going to take to these slow top heave things that people called practical, I decided to buy a bunky 98 model GLX Triton Club Cab . . . I had a lot of fun in the big girl, but I needed a few more creature comforts.

The Triton (2" body lift and 35" jungle trekks):

So off I went and bought an ex mining 2006 model GX Prado 2 weeks ago. Its life comes from a 3L turbo diesel (1KZ pre D4D motor) that has just ticked over 100k.

It came with tint, after market cruise control, cargo barrier and not much else.

So in the first week of owning my 'new toy', or so the lil lady calls it, I took it along the powerlines track in stock trim to see how it went . . . surprisingly good for a stock rig. I got hung up in a couple of points and my entry and exit angles were a lil soft, but the all wheel drive system and independent suspension handled the terrain perfectly.

The day I picked it up:

So that in mind, let the mods begin . . .

The bar work was graced with the bull spots off the Triton, simple but effective. The cheese cutter all terrain tyres had to go in place of something more substantial, for this the 17x6 steelies have been replaced by a set of 17x7.5’s and wrapped in 275/70x17 Maxxis Bighorn muddies. This has given the GX about 2” of lift but has unfortunately sapped what grunt the little 3L TD had.

With the spotties mounted and the cheese cutters still on:

    Hello Bighorns:

    So more mods . . .

I have booked the Big Girl in with Matt at United Fuel Injection to slip on a 3” turbo back Manta exhaust system, install a Rapid chip and tune it all in on the dyno. We are expecting a gain of around 20KW’s and 55NM’s.

Will keep you posted on future mods as they happen (lift, bull bar, recovery points, snorkel, dual batteries, fridge, gps, stereo, twin lockers, etc).

Good to see another GX featured in this section. How are the new tyres on flat ground? Do they fit OK within the guards? I look forward to hearing how the tune-up goes, our Percy is a bit sluggish and I've been considering fitting reconditioned injectors as a starting point - saw some for $300 on eBay.

Well the rig went in for a sly power upgrade on Friday . . . what a difference a free flowing exhaust, chip and tune up makes.

Matt from United Fuel Injection recommended fitting a 3" Taipan exhaust and Rapid tuning chip. Unfortunately due to availability we couldn’t source a Taipan exhaust, so settled for the Manta 3” turbo back system. He advised going with the Rapid tuning chip for its tune-ability, they have found from experience to get a better spread of power in the 1KZ motors.

Matt estimated a power gain of about 15-20KW’s and 40-50NM’s . . . he ended up squeezing 19KW’s and 60NM’s out of if . . . not only has the power and torque increased, the exhaust now lets the turbo spool up with ease and has dramatically reduced turbo lag.

I tested the rig out by heading to Jurien for the weekend towing a fully loaded enclosed bike trailer and I didn’t have a problem overtaking the numerous boats and caravans on the road and it handled the soft beach sand with ease.

I would definitely recommend this upgrade to my fellow 1KZ owners

All sounds good. How much did the Rapid chip set you back?

Hey Joey, thanks for the welcome . . . I’ll keep the updates coming.

Next couple of mods will have to be 2” suspension lift (I’m thinking Old Man Emu) and a snorkel for before winter gets here.

The rig and I spent a day on the beach last weekend:

Re: Gino’s 120 Series GX 3L TD Build

I finally pulled my finger out and knocked up a "budget" spacer for my spare tyre carrier so I could get my muddy spare on the back.

I had a look around the net to find a "flash" spacer but to no avail, so off to Coles I went . . . 2 x $7.95 nylon chopping boards were bought, cut to size, holes drilled and spare carrier was reinstalled with longer bolts.

Spare fits like a glove now:
