  • Yep, I wouldn't think there would be enough cranks for the winch - slightly off topic but may be useful for William - is it possible to wire the winch up to both batteries, given the high draw they have?

    • I could do that D4D but they'd ask me to pay extra labour, like they did when I asked them to cut more off the bumper when i had the bullbar fitted. It would actually be harder for me to arrange for them to rewire it for me - not worth the hassle for something i can fix up in an hour. I just hope there's enough wire in there for me to relocate it to the main battery.

      • I wouldnt be paying for the rework. I'd be having a robust discussion with the owner and/or ARB head office.

        • I have to agree with D4D, I believe it may also be written in the instruction manual as well. I would be taking it back and asking the question.

          Looking good to William.

          • Simply not worth it in this instance and point in time. Troublesome to arrange for a car when it's getting serviced there. Especially given that I work on the other side of the city!

            • Thanks Dan. Yes it does say so in the instruction manual. I doubt they would have bothered to check the specs of the amptech. I suppose they thought I had the second battery for the winch given there's nothing connected to it.... I use the aux for lighting using clamps directly to the contacts.

              Cheers

              • You will probably shorten the life of your battery, actually they have probably killed it anyway when they spooled on the wire rope. Come to think of it, don't even think of winching until you have spooled out all your rope and spooled it in under tension. Otherwise you will be needing an angle grinder to cut your shiny new wire rope off the winch.

                • I don't think the spooled it under tension! Rope felt a bit slack when I took a bit of it out. Can't say for sure though. I'll switch it to the starter batt for the trip next week. Long term solution is looking like an optima...

I think you will find there will be there will be plenty of play in the cable to swap it over mate, I doubt they would have cut the pre fitted lugs off and trimmed to size but I could be wrong.

Your car is really coming along well, keen now to get my new Tyres on and gps in next week. It's amazing how much money we can spend on these toys...

Interesting idea Madkore. Wouldn't it just be a case of using the redarc's override switch? I don't have it wired up and I don't plan on doing it either... Regardless of whether half the load is spread over the two batteries, I can't imagine it would be good for the amp tech. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You can close the relay on a redarc and power back to your main battery but the normal redarc is only good for 100A and 400A inrush, if you were going to do this it would be better to get the bigger model with 200A cont, also heavier link leads between batteries. I had my 120 wired to enable this and have wired my 150 with 50mm cable so its possible but the redarc i have fitted is still only the regular 100A model.

I posted this pic on myswag a couple of years back and had to go searching.... A guy i work with told me story about a Troopy, 2 kids and what happened when they winched in with the winch hook connected to the towbar. I though of the dangers (and the kids) and fitted one of these, cant remember exactly but i believe this isolator was/is 400A cont .

                        • Dan, yeah I had a quick look at the wiring through the grill, seemed doable at the ine. Only way to find out is to take off the plastic cover over the radiator and move it over....

I was thinking... I'd only expect to use the winch a couple of times a year. Hence the magnum and not a warn 9.5XP. I reckon I could get away with having the winch wired up to the starter....would just mean running the engine for a while after winching to ensure there's enough juice in it to start up the next time.

It is amazing what we spend on these toys... I can justify it by the amount of times I take it out bush and the comfort and safety it provides. It's all worth it if you ask me!

Also looking forward to a writeup and pics of your new set of rubbers.

                          Cheers

                              • It's still $80 for a switch! There's an alternative on bay for $35. I much prefer the one you have though.

I'll keep on doing some research... Should have had the damn box installed under the bonnet! Just wasn't sure if it would fit behind the air box. No going back now anyway, they kept the bull bar plate that hides the winch control box mounts.
