      Guys,

Thanks for all your help, it is really like buying a new Prado, which model do you get, what can you afford, do you get extra accesories etc....
I have found the 60d body for $750, and was looking to buy an all round lens hence the 18-200mm, as a good starting point, so I didn't have to carry more than one lens. But it like anything once you learn more about the product you always want more and more things.

The size of the camera fits nicely in my hands, so that is a bonus, might be a bit big for the wifes hands, but no doubt I will be taking the pics anyway.

We have a point and shoot camera, canon ixus

we also have lenses from the non-digital slr canon which also fot the digital(despite some issues with conversions).

I will continue my search, but great responses from you all, appreciate your help.

I will let you know how I go

I was also think 32gb class 10 30mb card , plus UV filter

Dave, a 32gb card will hold a lot of photos, I mean a lot. The we use smaller cards and change regular just because if one gets corrupted the damage in loss of photos is less. Ie we use 4/8 GB which still can hold up to 500/1000 depending on the size. Their is a place called "cheap chips" that sells cards very cheap, they are in Brisbane.
That camera price is very cheap, is it in oz??

Agree with the card size, better of getting a few smaller cards.

Sometimes the quality of lenses has more of an impact on the photo quality than the camera, food for thought.

Canon 600d with 18 - 135mm. This is my 3rd Canon, EOS300D bought 2000 still going but has some issues. I also use the 18 - 55mm and 200 and 300mm telephoto lenses that came with the 300. The 600D has a polarizing digital filter that really brings out the colours.
18gig card will give 3900 18mb pics, or 10,000 4.5 mb pics or 422 raw & 18mb pics. My last foray into the desert saw me take 660 pics. Get a second battery too.

You'll probably need a new faster computer to handle all the pics as I found out. Check out topbuy.com.au. A lot of deals you see at Harvey Normal don't come with the card, filter, bag etc so these are all extras.

                      Howdy Dave

Brought one for the wife for christmas it is pretty cool. But I know I'm not gunna give it to DJ (Junior AJ120) as it on sports mode it takes a radical amount of pics really quick.
Has Tamron 18-270 lens. She is only learning how to use it but has taken some really good pics with it. Was told anyting above that would be a waste unless doing professional or you have too much money.

                      Regards Adam
Yep.....I have a Prado just like you

After lots and lots and lots of research we went with 60D and Tamron 18-270 zoom. (Buy the best glass you can afford. It will generally out last your camera body) We went for the Tamron mainly because we are going on a trip Binns, Darwin, Kakadu, Gibb River Rd, Broom etc, etc later in the year and my main concern was getting dust in the camera. By puting the 18-270 on there will be no need to change lenses, keeping in mind the crop factor takes it out to about 420mm or thereabouts. (after saying buy the best you can afford we since have also bought a Canon 50mm for portrait mainly home use- went for the cheaper 1.1.8 which still seems like a quite good lens)
Good luck with your purchase. We are very happy with the 60D. As for what I like most about this camera, the swing out screen is an absolute belter. I tend to agree with ondaboat about getting anything above being a waste unless you are thinking professional

                        Cheers

Dont rule out the Sony DSLR cameras, the lens quality is awesome, as well as the variety of lenses and filters, ect, but it all comes down to your budget.

                            Ahhh, my other expensive hobby....

Good glass is key... The body makes a difference for speed (frames per second) along with plenty of other features, but if you have a crap lens on the front of a great camera, you'll get crap images.
I have two Canon 50D's, Canon 5DMKII and lots of lenses and other gear...

Mega pixels only matter if you want huge prints or to be able to crop the photo severely.

Samo, unless you want to print pictures bigger than A3 (or there about's) don't worry about upgrading the body the mega pixels you have should be enough to print this size, spend on lenses that give you more of what you shoot most, such as wide angle for landscapes, long for birds or a dedicated macro lens.

                            I'll shutup now..

I have the 40D. 60 looks like a good upgrade. It gives you a lot of manual override options. I you're not fussed on that and want a smaller size camera the 600D. If you want to take sports stuff and need the faster frame rate go the 7D. Kogan has them all at great prices. I wanted something for astronomy and sports and the 40 has fitted that nicely. If I was buying a canon today I'd go the 7D it's low light and frame rate is amazing.

My wife finds the 40D a bit to large a body to hold and likes the 550 etc a better size for her hand. I love the 40D despite the size and weight. I take it to athletics most Saturdays over summer and click off a good few hundred each time. Sports mode most of the time. I'd get 600-800 out about shots of a battery, but a second or third is good to have.

Most of these are with the 40D

The only cheap glass I'd go for is the f1.8 plastic fantastic 50mm. Well worth the $120.
If I could afford it I'd get L lenses. the 18-85 USM EFS is close and very happy with it.
