Nothing against the others but another vote for Canon. Currently 5Dmkii but holding myself back from trying out the mkiii because I know I'll have to have it if I try it!
Canon 16-35mm is a also another great wide angle lens, had a loaner for a trip to Tas recently and loved it. I've also heard Sigma 12-24mm is good and have seen some impressive shots from it. Plan to purchase the 12-24 before heading to the Kimberleys next month.

Just be aware on the 60D the 16-35mm and 17-40mm wont be super wide. With the 1.6x crop they will equate to about 25-56mm. If you are after ultra wide Sigma make a 8-16mm which will give you as wide as you can go without going fisheye! Canon 10-22mm is also a great lens from what I've read.

        You'll love the 5D mkIII

Photo Continental rang me today to see if I still want the 1Dx I have on order... I've been so impressed with the 5D mkIII that I can't justify the extra $4000 for the 1Dx, especially when it's only 18MP compared to the 5's 22MP.
        Cheers, Leon

Another Canon user here, still quite happy with the 5D Mk 1 body, 17-40, 24-105 and 100-400 zooms, 50/1.8 (one of the sharpest and cheapest lenses Canon makes), 100mm macro, 430EX flash, Feisol tripod. All Canon lenses. The 24-105 is very rarely off the body - it's a beautiful lens, and a real useful zoom range on full frame. I'd love a 5D Mk3, but can't justify the cost. Also have a G12 for when I don't want to carry all the gear. With a little 270EX flash, it's a great lightweight travel kit. Oh, and there's also an old blunderbus Mamiya RB67 and a few lenses gathering dust like someone else's above. I keep saying I should get it out and do some "slow photography", but it doesn't seem to happen. Part of the problem is that the whole RB outfit weighs well over 10kg!

                Snaga,
I do not want to highjack the thread but I need some advice. As you know I am a great fan of small see and shoot cameras. I have had fantastic results out of two Nikon Coolpix cameras. I have literally worn both of them out over 5 years. I like them because I travel extensively and it just sits in an old mobile phone carry case on my belt. Always with me and no great logistics to keep it on the go. Additionally they cost $100 - $150. The beswt bit is they produce great shots and the coffee table books I have had printed from them are just fantastic.
Any advice on the latest innovations or should I just stick with the Nikon Coolpix.
For your better understanding: The model is Nikon Coolpix S570 and it has the following written on the lens 'Nikkor 5X Wide Optical Zoom' and '5.0 - 25.0 mm and 1:2.7 - 6.6' . All of which means nothing to me.

Callo, it sounds like the Coolpix jobs are working perfectly for you, so I'd suggest not changing a thing! If you are happy with what you are getting, you don't need to know the technicalities. As someone said earlier in the thread, the camera doesn't take the photo, the photographer does. And there's another old saying about this too - "the best camera is the one you have with you".

                    Hi ya Callo.

The 5x on the lens tells you what the optical zoom is.
Ie. how close can the zoom make a distant object look.
All the other bits don't mean much really but the important bit would be 'wide' meaning it starts at a wider angle of view than standard. Ie see more of the vista in the shot.

If you've ever said to yourself 'gee I wish that bird was bigger in the photo or gee if like to be further away from this snake while photographing it' then maybe look to increase the 'optical zoom' (try not to use digital zoom) beyond 5x.

As mentioned already... if it ain't broke don't fix it.

You already know the Nikon system and possibly have batteries / chargers that may be compatible with the new one (maybe not too, they do change with models sadly).

A great place to see what's current and what the tech heads think of them is a website called dpreview.com
Everything there from point and shoot to mortgage your house cameras.
There's also a glossary of photography terms on the site which may explain some things.

Any specific questions though feel free to post up here or PM me.
                    Cheers, Leon

Canon for me. After using my sons 600d for a day last year, I was sold, hook, line and sinker!!

I ended up buying a new EOS 70D after reading a lot of camera reviews. I have also bought (just recently) a Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 and have to say this is the most magnificent lens I have ever used. The AF with this lens and the 70d body is unbelievable.
Still learning how to drive it all at the moment.

Why is camera gear so expensive in Australia??

Decided I will buy a Cannon 60D, just the camera.

Now, for those that are owners, (everyone says don't get the basic lens, NOTED!) But what good quality (not exceptional as I am new to DSLR's) should I get as a first general purpose lens bearing in mind I buy to keep rather than replace but do not want to sell the wife or kids to pay for it. PS It will mainly be used initially for 4wd photos, camping and holiday shots, with the occassional home birth, Clipsal 500 and UFO sighting)

                              Good Choice MLC.

I got the EFS 17-55. Its a high quality general purpose lens but only works with the smaller format sensor size. If you ever expect to upgrade to a full size sensor then don't get this one.

I am very happy with it, but sadly quality and price go hand in hand.

Limited market and locked down distribution channels. If you're prepared to wear the potential warranty hassles the exact same camera can be purchased from HK for a lot less. Just remember to stay under the $1K GST threshold when ordering from OS, otherwise that bargain may not be so cheap after all.
