Well you already know my recommendation but it's not a cheap lens unfortunately. Some of the Sigma lenses are good value but I have heard of the occasional recalibration being required. When I bought my Sigma lens I got C. R. Kennedy (Pentax and Sigma distributor in AU) to price match grey import (they will only do it on Sigma lenses though) and they will perform the recalibration free of charge if required during the warranty period.

If you want to shoot motorsport sharp glass and a fast aperture are good to have in addition to a long focal length (in the 300 - 400mm range is ideal).

      Yep

I have started looking in Australia for a 60D and a Canon EF-S 15-85 is. Apparently they don't make the 60D any more...... Hopefully I can snaffle the last one somewhere or it will be a grey import from DWI

I hadn't heard that, it's still a great camera. DWI still sell it as a body only as well as in kit form, you won't have any hassles buying from them whichever way you decide to go. I got my 60D from DWI and the 15-85 from T-Dimension via their eBay store (longer warranty via their eBay store than directly via their website for some reason).

Ive just picked up a Olympus OM-D E-M5 with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-50mm 1:3.5-6.3 lens. I find it to be the perfect size for traveling and being on the move without the bulkiness of a full body. The body is top notch and both the camera and lens are weather sealed, so again a winner when im out and about. Throw a UV lens cap on and off you go with landscape, portrait or macro capability etc etc. Only thing ive found is that the menu system is a bit daunting at first but once you read through a start up guide from another user its options and capabilities are up there with the bigger DSLR's no doubt.

I have two friends that are photographers for a living. One mainly uses Nikon and the other Cannon but they do have each type of brand. They have said they both have pros and cons. Its interesting to note that they consider the Nikon range to give a sharper picture and the Cannon a more soft approach. That's not to say that its good or bad either way but dependant on what you want in a picture. In any case unless im a pro that can afford/ want to buy a full frame, 4k plus DSLR and are heavily into editing my photos in RAW format then I think either of those two brands will suffice no problem. Biggest tip I've had is to try the cameras out before you buy. No point having the latest and greatest someone else recommends and you find when it gets to the door its not comfortable in the hand or hard to navigate and use. In most cases, if the ergonomics are not to your liking you'll find your reaching for the iphone rather than the 1k dumped into a digital camera.

          Good luck

Dependant on where you are looking and if your dead set keen on it being new. There are sellers out there that refurbish those bodies.

            Cheers,

Is there any reason that you are set on a 60d instead of the 70d?

The 70d is a brilliant piece of kit and you would be much better going for it over the 60d, especially when the 60 isn't sold any more.\

As for lenses, try a Sigma 17-75 option as they are a good all rounder without the price tag of some others.

Just one reason being price. I usually buy the best I can afford, but in this case I have no prior DSLR or SLR experience so the 60d with a Cannon 15 -85 EF-S at $1250 makes good sense. If I get into it more than just 4wding, birthdays, car shots and the occasional outing then I will go 7d or similar beast.

You can get the 70d with that lens for less than that here if that helps.

The next step up is in to the full frame range, so you'd need to be aware that the upgrade might also mean replacing all of your lenses. The 6d is the best option for starting out in the full frame range, despite the 7d being a higher number!

It's a bit hard to distinguish URL links but if you clicked on the word 'here' is setsujoku's post, it will bring you to
                        http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/...R-Cameras.aspx

But the link is for the 18-55, whereas you wanted the 15-85.

Searching for a full frame last year for <$2k I went for the Canon 6D body. Lenses added since then; Canon 24-105mm f4 L IS USM, EF70-300IS EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM and 100mm EF f/2.8L IS USM.

So far happy with the results, however the camera has a capacity well beyond my skill level. Hopefully I can work on that in the future.
