  • Upgrading from Canon 450D

I've just ordered a Canon 600D for my daughter's Christmas present - she's doing a Photography course next year through school and this seemed the best compromise between price and features for what she needs.

As I've been looking into the camera options, I'm thinking it's time to upgrade the 450D I've had for a number of years.

Looking on ebay I think it's probably worth about $260 for the body only or $350 with the 18-55 lens.

I like the look of the 60D which is going to cost me an additional $400 - $450 on top of what the 450D will get so that seems reasonable.

I'm wondering if it's worth holding out for the new 70D that is rumored to be coming out in 2013 - does anyone know anything about this model? I guess another option is to wait for the 70D to come out and see if I can pick up a 60D at a discount price?

Be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this.

There is a school of thought that says while you wait you miss out. I am a Nikon user and wanted to go full frame with a D700 and when I could finally justify upgrading the next great thing was the D800. So I waited. And waited. And waited. I have it now and it's fabulous but I did miss out on full frame for about 2 years. Places like DP review should have heads up about forthcoming cameras. Just make sure any lenses you want to keep are compatible with the new camera. I am used to Nikon where pretty much any lens fits any camera but Canon aren't so generous.

I know what you mean about upgrade compatibility issues. I still have by Canon EOS650 from before going Digital and have the Canon Speedlite 430EZ - I had assumed that the flash would be compatible with the new camera but alas no

I know all my Canon lenses work with the 450D and am pretty sure they will be OK with the 60D. I will check them on the 600D when it arrives to be sure.

Not sure I'd be prepared to wait two years for the upgrade

Going by the rumor mill the 70D may be worth the wait, but how long do you wait for the ideal camera and at what cost. I have the 60D (upgraded from a 450D) and love it. I bought mine shortly after it was released, so paid a fair amount for it - now they are really good value, especially if you were to buy a parallel/grey import from say d-d-photographics or the like.

I got the 600D from Kogan at a very good price and would probably go to them for the 60D judging by the price they are offering.

The other school of thought is invest in lenses, not bodies. However, it is a good idea to have a usable decent body to start off with. If you struggle with the controls, then you won't be shooting much.

Hell yes glass is very important. Forgot to mention that. In anticipation of going full frame I only bought quality FX lenses and nothing that was only DX. By the time I picked up the D800 I already had 5 of the 6 lenses i want that Nikon recommends for the 800. That's one advantage of Canon the good glass is not as expensive. I only found out about the Canon lens compatibility thing helping a mate shop for a wide angle lens last Tokyo trip.

Also Andrew makes a very valid point. Don't upgrade just for the pixels or prestige. You need to want to use the features and will use them. Any body with 10MP will produce excellent photographs (actually 6MP) and the frills won't be of benefit if you don't know how to manipulate them. For evil.

It is a valid point re pixels as I found that my old 350d was a better camera than the 450d that I bought to replace it, which is also a reason why I was keen on the 60d. I was actually going to buy the 550d but was recommended the 60d due to the amount of photography I do. I also use a 15-85 IS USM EF-S lens, which is an excellent general purpose lens.

I've gone from a 10D to a 20D and a 350D to a 60D now (plus a couple of P&S compacts for happy snaps). Most of my lenses have gone from camera to camera but when I upgraded to the 60D I rationalised and sold off most of my old gear, time for some newer tech.

I see the 6D is now out so there's another full frame option but I can't justify the cost for the amount of photography I do. I bought my 60D as a grey import from DWI and my 15-85 EF-S from T-Dimension via their eBay shop (they offer a 5yr warranty on lenses via eBay).

I think I got around $300-$350 for the 350D and 18-55mm kit lens I bought it with but that was a while back now (over 1 year) so would be surprised if you could that much for it now. Then again with eBay who knows, people pay silly prices there sometimes.

I am in a similar boat. I have a 40D and looking at upgrading. The 650 and 60 are very similar and I was ready to go 650 until I heard the 70D should be out early next year. The 60D dropped the magnesium body and is not as robust as the earlier X0D series. Rumours are the 70D will go back to being a more robust camera. I will wait to look at the 70D and new 7D. I take a lot of spots shots and want the faster frame rates. My old 40D still has a faster frame rate than the 60D or 650D, so happy to wait a little longer. canonrumours.com seem to have a good handle on what is happening.
But saying that the 60D and 650D are a good step up from the 450D.
It is never an easy choice and I don't like parting with my money :-)
I also agree good glass makes a big difference.

I'm probably looking to upgrade around mid year so early next year for the 70D release is good - be interesting to see what it offers (and the price). The 7D is out of my 'realistic' price range which is why I was looking at the 60D, although the 650D is another option.

I got an email from Kogan last night to say my daughter's 600D has been posted so that should be here early next week - I'm looking forward to having a play with that.

From Canon rumors dated 21-11-12 which I thought was interesting;-
"It was also noted that the 1100D and 60D would quietly be discontinued in the first part of 2013 with no replacements being imminent."

I've been looking very closely at the specs for the 650D and 60D and apart from the slightly faster shooting speed (5.3 versus 5) I can't really see any difference to justify the extra $140.

In several aspects I think the 650D is better (wider ISO range, more creative filters).

A friend of mine has just bought a 650d and when I compare the two, the first thing I notice is that the 650d is lighter than the 60d. The 650d does however have a dedicated part of the sensor for video focusing, it also has the more basic control layout on the back with buttons instead the 60d's dial (which I now prefer). I also believe that the 60d has some "environmental seals" that the 650d does not. I also prefer the more solid feel of the 60d.
                            Just some thoughts.

Looking at the dimensions and weight I did wonder if this would be the case.
