  • GoPro Hero 3 Silver vs Black edition

Was hoping some of you GoPro boffins could explain to me what the main difference is between these 2 models that justifies the ~$100 price difference. I know the silver is 11mp and the black is 12mp plus comes with a remote but both have WiFi and have HD 1080P video. Anything else I should know about?

i am no boffin, i have struggled abit to get my head around using it and making videos, i have the black edition, however i dont use its extra capabilities of 2.7k or 4k video recording (which is cinema quality) as my computer cannot handle the large amount of graphics info. it will not play smooth videos shot in this mode, i would need some much greater computing power to handle it. anything up to 1080p is fine for me, the remote that comes with the black works ok but if you have an iphone you can download a free app that works better as it shows you a preveiw of what the camera is seeing, so for me the silver edition would have done every thing i wanted and left change for the extra battery and suction mount.(battery life is only a few hours).

Basically the White edition is the old Hero HD, and the Silver is the old Hero 2 which have been rehoused in smaller cases, the Black is the new Hero 3.

They are both wi-fi enabled but Black comes with wi-fi remote included. The silver doesn't come with the remote, its an additional purchase for about $80. So if you want to use the wi-fi remote, there really is only really about $20 difference. Personally I have the old Hero 2 and my next purchase will be the wi-fi bac pac and remote so I don't have to get out of and keep turning it on and off. Its worth it IMO.

      Also:
The lBlack's low light cpabilities are better
The Black lens is meant to be sharper
The Black edition can shoot 30 shots per second in single shot burst mode, the Silver = 10/sec

Thanks guys. Sounds like the remote will be useful if you have the GoPro mounted on the outside of a vehicle (depends on the range I guess).

Better low light performance and a sharper lens are always good to have. I have a good DSLR too for still shots and it shoots video too but I won't be hanging that one off the Prado LOL.

the free app on iphone and android makes the remote not so essential, the app has more control than the remote. if you have a smart phone already

the black can shoot higher frame rates and higher resolutions. but that means it uses more memory card storage and needs faster cards.

often the version 3 silver pops up on catch of the day and kogan for ~$200 ish..

I have both the black and silver. The black uses massive amounts of data and unless your computer can handle it then its a bummer.. But, the gopro cineform (freeware) can scale it back without losing the quality. The wifi remote is good but I never use it.. Unless I have it on a long pole and want to take good action shots.

I think the silver will be good enough for you and you'll be very happy with it. But if you can stretch the budget go the black!

That's good to know, I have a Galaxy S2 android phone.

the black can shoot higher frame rates and higher resolutions. but that means it uses more memory card storage and needs faster cards.
That won't be a problem for me.

              Will keep an eye out.

I would think my PC would be up the job, have an i7 3770K cpu with 8GB RAM.

I think the silver will be good enough for you and you'll be very happy with it.
Fair enough, I'm still mulling it over.

                Fido,

I "thought" my Mac would also be good enough considering the amount of movies I already make on it with my hero2 camera but I was very wrong.

The extra framerate of the Black (at 1080P) make it essential in my opinion. I took my black skiing and had it on 30fps. Whilst the footage was clear, it wasn't smooth, and I was a bit disappointed. 1080p at 60fps is the go.

I assume that the 60fps is what give you the ability to do slo-mo stuff?

yep. higher the framerate, the better slow-mo. 720p and 120fps is great.

Does anyone know if JB Hi Fi will price match? I got a heap of JB vouchers for my birthday but have found the GoPro Black and Silver models on sale at Torpedo7 for a lot less :-

                          http://www.torpedo7.com.au/shop/bike...s-and-housings

I've tried looking for JB's Price Match policy on their site but can't find it.

JB won't price match internet stores, has to be a B&M store like Harvey Norman. They weren't interested in offering any discount whatsoever. Buggered if I'm paying them $100+ for the privledge of using up my gift vouchers, might use them on an iPad instead.

I've seen the Go Pro Black for as low as $344 via Staticice, probably grey import but who cares.

Corine use you vouchers for the Ipad if you want one.
They chew heaps of power Corine so if you plan to use the Camera outside the car look at getting more battery's.

This is what i just used on the Fraser trip and it worked great and you get 2 extra battery's.
