  • Telephoto lens recomendations

Just after some advice on what telephoto lens people are using.

I own a canon 60d and am looking at getting a new lens as I only have the 18-55mm kit lens. I don't want to spend big money as I am still a beginner. I was looking at the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 as an all round lens or possibly the Canon EFS 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a entry level telephoto lens?

    Cheers Matt

I use the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS and love the speed of the lens... I used to have the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and sold it in favour of the Canon one.
My studio colleague uses the 70-200mm f4 version and sometimes I with I had that one... a whole lot lighter and with the ISO's today the extra stop can be compensated via that.

The longer the zoom range the more you are compromising image quality... modern lenses not so much though...

F6.3 is very slow for something at the 200~300mm range so would be quite sluggish focusing (not that I've tried it)
    Cheers, Leon

as an entry level lens go the sigma 18 - 250 for about $500. Gets good reviews as compared the Tamron equivalents.

As Leon says there are more options and better/faster etc but heading to the $1000+ price tag

          Matt,
I have exactly that setup - Canon 60d with a Tamron 18-270 Lens - and absolutely love it! I especially like the fact that I everything I need in single lens - it has very nicely replaced two other lenses. It is a simple but very effective setup and much easier to take on our trips. I also believe the quality of the resulting photos are excellent - but I am only an amateur.

              fun

Yep anything worth doing well seems to be expensive, but it can be fun to get a good result for all of that hard work.

Cheap and reasonable option is the Canon EF 75-300 MkIII I have used it on the 40D for ages.
dpreview has good comparisons of lenses and always worth a look.
I have a 100-400L now and that is brilliant, but expensive even second hand.

If your only taking holiday/nice photos and have no need to edit or chasing that tac sharp image a simple 18-200+ will be perfect. I used this combo on my 1100d for 2 years and i have some awesome shots! I have since upgraded to a 6d, 24-70 2.8 usm ii and a 70-200 2.8 is which is perfect setup for what i do. Just buy what suits your budget/needs.

Without spending a fortune, the best bet will be either a 70-200/4 or the kit 55-200 you noted above.

When I have to carry these around, they get a bit heavy..

Try the 100-400L that critter gets heavy when in the bag with the 6d and 24-105. Good weight training.
The bigger camera shops in Melbourne have a second hand area, you may pick up one in a place like that.
With 3months warranty standard you get a while to try them out.
