  • Lunar Eclipse Tonight.

It is well known there are some very knowledgeable photographers and photo-takers on this forum. That is some professionals that do it for a living and some amateurs that have a passion for their hobby.

To those and anyone interested I am seeking some general advice on setting for photos of the Lunar Eclipse tonight. If relevant I will be using a Canon D60 and a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM Lens.

    My limited research is suggesting:
    ISO =100
    30 sec
    F8 to F11
Use a timer to avoid shake.

All input appreciated. Photos to come after the event.

    Start with
    ISO100
    1/200th sec shutter
    F8 aperture

Then adjust accordingly for faster shutter i.e. 1/250th, 1/400th (don't go below 1/200th) and change the aperture (smaller and larger) according to the exposure.

You will need a very good tripod and if it is windy, you will need a faster shutter. Also turn off IS when mounted on the tripod. If you have a cheapie tripod, weigh it down. Use remote shutter release or a timer release.

long lens and a tripod is a must.
At total you'll be closer to a few seconds of exposure.

Sorry, forgot that it was going to be an eclipse, so the moon won't be so bright.

I tried last night at 200mm and yes it is tiny. 500mm would have been nice.

I'll see how my 100-400mm lens goes.
May try my 900mm reflector telescope if I get a chance to set it up earlier.

Set the camera to the largest size and resolution as you'll be cropping it for sure.

Here is one I prepared earlier.

Manual focus too guys. If I can find the original on my external drive at work I will post up the settings. The blood moon shot was f4, 1/4" @ ISO 200. I set it for 1/8" and bracketed three stops either side. The half moon was f8, 1/125" @ ISO 800. Both 400mm lens but full frame camera. The stitched shot used various shots from other eclipses so the metadata is a bit confused.

Essentially you will need to keep adjusting the settings as the moon is eclipsed until you get to the blood moon.
