  • GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

Hi all, well, like many others on this forum, a GoPro HD camera was on my Santa wishlist for this Christmas and I was lucky enough to score one .

As a few people on PradoPoint have these great little action cameras, I thought it'd be good to start a thread on them with some tips, tricks, best angles, best settings etc as well as some links to videos taken with the GoPros.

So, if you have a GoPro, how about posting some links to your videos here and let us know what you've found the best places to mount them on your Prado are, the settings you use etc.

Greasy from Germany has posted a great video on his buildup thread which is a good one to kick this topic off.

Looking forward to hearing from other GoPro users.

    Cheers, Sam.

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

    Hi Sam,

I was one of the lucky ones and have just started getting to know the GoPro camera basics and the Final Cut editing software.

I'm yet to make a video with the Prado but created a quick clip with my dog over the weekend. I'm very happy with the quality of the high definition video -

    http://vimeo.com/18323079

I will list a few pointers for other GoPro owners that I've found useful -

    1. Be sure to upgrade to the latest firmware:
    http://www.goprocamera.com/support/hdheroupdate.php

    2. Once you upgrade the firmware, be sure to choose the 'PAL' video format for our region.

    3. I convert the GoPro video files from the camera into 'usable' files with a free program called MPEG Streamcllip available here:
    http://www.squared5.com/

    4. I purchased a third party aluminium rod extender & camera handle from Eye of Mine:
    http://www.eyeofmine.com/gopro/order...ofmineproducts

    5. The Eye of Mine YouTube channel has some useful introductory videos:
    http://www.youtube.com/eyeofminegopro

    6. GoPro Users Support Forum with an Aussie Admin called Rambo:
    http://goprouser.freeforums.org/

    Hope this helps,

    Scott

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

Thanks for that Scott. Some great info and nice video of the pup.

That EyeofMine link is great. They have some great products. Do you mind telling me what the total cost of the extension rod was (including delivery)? Looks like a good accessory to have.

I'll be using iMovie 11 for editing.

We're off to Walhalla this weekend for some 4wding so should get some good footage to play with. I'm also going sky diving in the next few weeks so looking for a good way to take the camera. Any ideas?

      Cheers, Sam.

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

        Sam,

I paid US$35 for postage of the extension rod, small camera handle and some 3M tape. Delivery time was about one and a half weeks.

For skydiving, you'd be hard pressed to look past the helmet front mount -

        http://www.goprocamera.com/products/...ront-mount.php

I plan to test the suction cup mount on the Prado over one of the next few weekends. I'll post my video online once edited.

        Regards,

        Scott

I bought a gopro hd hero few months back. it simply is the tits. have used it on a few driving trips, both 4wding and onroad. i could post up couple of videos but theyre not uploaded in HD ( i dont know how others do upload to youtube in HD, it must take forever) so they dont do the awesome little camera justice. photos and underwater video are awesome too.

          heres a scenic picture:

          tips ive learnt:

          - when mounted on the outside of a vehicle the sound is average, regardless of speed and covers. ive had the full cover on and wind noise on playback is unbearable above about 40.
          - if the camera is dirty, only remove the cover if youre ready to clean it. and by clean it, i mean give the thing a thorough wash esp the seal and hinge.
          - recent firmware upgrade is a must.

GoPro's Youtube channel has heaps of great vids: http://www.youtube.com/user/GoProCamera?feature=chclk

Yeah I've found the same thing re noise when mounted to the outside of the car. I got the new firmware the other day. Good for the upside down shooting mode.

Will take some footage at Walhalla this weekend and post it up here next week.

            Cheers, Sam.

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

This is a short complilation of videos i took from the weekend's trip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDLTUvRw4PM. considering its supposed to be 720p I think my video looks very grainy compared to other videos I've seen shot on a gopro in 720. If anyone can suggest why, I'm all ears.

              Settings were:
R4, so hence the max 720p. Think I might stick with R5 from now on.
              NTSC/30fps
              centre weighted metering for exposure
uploaded straight from iMovie 11 to Youtube

I switched covers during the day and back again; you can the difference in the sound quality but Im hesitant to use the 'half' casing (or whatever its proper name is) due to the dust that you always get going bush.

the camera was mounted in 2 locations- top drivers side of the windscreen, and centre front of bonnet. next time I'll mount it back about 1 foot on the bonnet, enough to just see the front bumper for a bit of perspective.

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

I think the YouTube video quality looks great once you change it from 360p to 720p in the settings just below the video frame.

If you wanted to experiment to see if there is a difference, rather than using the function to export directly from iMovie to YouTube, try and do an export from iMovie and 'manually' upload the video to YouTube via the webpage.

Try these settings and see how it goes ...

iMovie -> Share -> Export using Quicktime

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

                  Hey Folks,

I've looking at getting one of these camera's as I want to start taking more footage when 4Wding.

I've been looking at the GoPro Hero HD Motorsport model kit that seems to be the best fit for my needs with all the relevant vehicle mounts etc.

Is this the model most people on here have gone for, or did anyone go for the HD 960 or the older SD model?

Looking around at where and how to purchase, I'm a bit unsure of the safest, best and cheapest way to buy one.

I can land one from the U.S. for $299.99 + $84.95 shipping with FedEx or UPS = $384.94, all probably in US dollars from the official website GoPro Hero site.

Whilst at GoPro Australia they list the SURF version only and only appear to operate through local Surf Shops.

I can buy one online in Australian for $379 from Adventure Cams

or another site I found called, GoPro Camera Australia.com gets you one for $389.79 AUS - plus $15 shipping.

The best I've found locally here in Brisbane for the GoPro Hero HD Motorsport model kit is called Cameras 4 Sport that has them for $369 AU plus postage if you need it.
All the HD Hero models are also available including the new HD960 and the older SD models which are cheaper than the HD Hero model.

Digital Camera Warehouse.com.au is another which has an online and local shop front but they are $399.00

Does anyone have any other suggestions of where to buy one from.
So far I'm leaning toward this Brisbane Seller at Cameras 4 Sport.

                  regards

GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

Santa got mine from GoPro Camera Australia. Not sure how much. I got the Motorsport version and after a full days 4wding today down at Walhalla, the only mount I used was the suction cup. Its unbelievably strong and it sticks anywhere in the outside of the car or on the inside of the windscreen.

In the middle of importing the clips into iMovie 11 an will post some video in the next few days.

I used R2 which is 720p at 30 frames per second. R4 as someone else mentioned earlier is actually the 960p setting which gives a larger vertical window but not as wide.

I just used the open backed door in the case except when we did the river crossing. I have found the waterproof door causes fog so I'll put some RainX on it at some stage which apparently fixes this.

                    Cheers, Sam.

cheers. originally tried the manual way using only the Export option, but that came out worse. It only uploaded to Youtube in 240p. I havent tried Export Using Quicktime, so I'll give that a go.

True, R4 is 960. What I shouldve have mentioned is that when exporting from iMovie the options are 720p then 1080p.

If you know someone in the US try here: http://pointofviewcameras.com/gopro. good value. postage within the US is free and using USPS to mail to aust is pretty reasonable, I think I remember $35 when I checked (I had to get mine quickly so I didnt go down this path).

Re: GoPro Camera Tips, Tricks and Videos

Ok so I had a play with my new camera yesterday taking over 70 minutes worth of video at R2 (720p PAL 25 frames per second).

I had a quick go using iMovie 11 this morning and here's part one of the video i'm going to make - http://vimeo.com/18601315

All in all I've very happy with the GoPro results although I need to work on getting the best angles, particularly from inside the car. When mounted on the windscreen, it shows too much dash and bonnet and not enough track. I mounted it as close to the glass as possible but still need to work on this. By far the best angle is with the camera mounted on the bonnet. It tends to show the steepness of the tracks better (although it still doesn't do them justice).

A remote would be great for these so if it's mounted outside, you don't have to keep getting out of the car to start/stop recording.

I'd also like to try R3 next time which is 60 frames per second to see if it stabalised the image a bit when the camera is hand held.

I'll be doing a trip report with more videos from this Walhalla trip and posting it in the Trip Report forum if anyone's interested. I got some great footage going through Deep Creek Tk #1 for those that know the area.

                        Cheers, Sam.

i shoot everything in R5.. takes up a bit more memory, but i think the ability to do whatever i want with it and stick with great resolutions keeps me there.

i've added you on vimeo, there are a heap of videos i've posted there, all HD from memory.

i've had a little bit of trouble with mine and the charging - i'm on my second camera, but going strong now. the first one died on my Uluru trip.
