60 year old prospector headed out 120km east of Laverton (WA) along a track off the Meriola to Coglia Road. The road was closed to all traffic due to flooding. He got bogged and suffered a heart attack whilst trying to get his Patrol and caravan out of the mud. He was alone but managed to pop his PLB and AUSSAR sent out emergency services to pick him up and bring him back into Laverton where RFDS flew him to Kalgoorlie. He is alive. I took my 4WD students out and we conducted a recovery exercise by pulling both the Patrol and the van out of the bog. It was around 35 degrees and the humidity was stinking but we had a great day out and got to use all the recovery gear. Oh, and we got to play in the mud and water.
Bogged Patrol and van.
We use the winch with extension strap to firstly pull the van rearwards.
Then we spin the van around with the cable and pull it straight back onto dry land. We then discover an ag bike in the van.
The Patrol won't start due to a hidden immobilizer so we winch it straight back.
The winch made it easy. We did think about snatching it rearwards but the goo was pretty thick around the heavy Patrol.
There was a lot of creeks across all roads with more rain coming.
The guy had no recovery gear. There were heaps of mining vehicles stuck everywhere including a pair of 30 tonne 8 wheel drive fuel carriers from Tropicana mine. They were not going to be easily recovered until the road dried out and a dozer or grader could get in to help.
