Badge Engineering?

Off topic I know but I'm curious, I was sitting behind what looked like an old Nissan Patrol on the way home tonight, in fact, it looked identical to the Nissan Patrol in the next lane except it had Ford badges. I know Ford sell re-badged Mazda's, my wife has a Ford Escape (Mazda Tribute) but I have never heard of them re-badging Nissan's.

Is this something someone has done themselves or did Ford really sell Patrols?

OK, it's a Ford Maverick (rebadged Nissan Patrol GR) only sold in Australia - thanks to Google

GQ Patrol = Ford Maverick

when the GQ patrol came out ford bought a heap of them and called them the maverick, they sold a few of them but not as many as the genuine thing. cheers samo

I bought one new when they came out in the 80's. The mav badge was heaps cheaper than the nissan badge. Mavericks came out with lower luxury spec levels. Same engine, body suspension though. I ran a large grazing property back then, and didn't want anything but a stocker, which was what the mav was.

In addition to the Patrol/Maverick there was also Nissan Pintara - Ford Corsair (I think)

Then the Ford / Nissan died and it became Ford / Mazda with the 323 /Laser the first (I think as its a long time ago lol)

What amuses me though is how spare parts prices for the same part vary from Ford to Nissan or Mazda, sometimes dearer sometimes cheaper

And most of us would remember when Commodores had Nissan engines and Toyota Corona's had Holden engines.

No much has changed today, tribute/ Ranger, mazda 2/ fiesta all start as the same car underneath the shells.

Ford Maverick = Nissan Pootrol
Holden Commodores = Toyota Lexan or Lexus ? got me that one.
Ford XF Ute = Nissan Ute


Obviously hard up for design teams and new inspiration at that time of the century they had to rebadge and release to get a niche in the market.

I once had a Brock Maverick......Patrol Evidently the Brock compliance plate was written on the back of the original ford plate
