I've read some of the comments from different Pradopointers about "Fleabay" and I take on board the note of caution this implies, However, it would be hard to beat the deal I just got; I have acquired a second-hand spare wheel, with a fairly worn tyre for $210. Now I do feel a bit guilty in that I have got the alloy wheel that matches those already on my GXL for less than the cost of a new tyre, but it is an example of how eBay can be worked to the buyer's advantage.
Unlike a "real" auction where the auctioneer can work to exhaust the bidding, eBay stops at a designated time. Therefore, when I have identified an item that I want, I will only bid once and only in the dying seconds of the auction. Not only that, I do not even have to be online for this bid to be placed.
I use a "sniping" service, www.powersnipe.com. At a cost of $US45 per year (and I don't remember having to renew), I can log in to Powersnipe, enter the eBay item number, set my maximum bid and the Powersnipe web server will place the bid with around seven seconds to go. As the price for the wheel shows, I have more than recouped the subscription in one transaction.
Of course, if you look at it the other way, eBay sux for sellers. They are expensive, you must use PayPal as a payment option, which also costs. Still, it does allow us to get a few dollars back for some of the junk we have accumulated over the years.
By the way; I do hope it wasn't any of you who entrusted your brother-in-law to sell an extra wheel for you.
