        Ryzz

Looks like the 'bird-caging' that has occurred is fairly severe (although no broken strands...yet!) so I would suggest you throw it out. You can just never tell the fatigue that the rope has suffered at that point and one of these snapping under full load can get messy.

Sorry mate...looks like you've got some $$'s to spend.

If you stay steel...go to a rigging supply shop as opposed to a 4wd shop and they'll make you a new one using your old hook and eye saving you a few $$'s. Will also be cheaper on the rope I'd think. Afterall the rope will be nothing special...check the Warn site for the specs...I'd think it would be a 6x19 G1770 wire.

You will need to get one pressed onto the cable. But the main reason it let go may be due to the fact that there were not enough winch cable around the drum placing an extra amount of pressure on the lug. You should keep at least 4-5 winds around the drum.....no less. Lucky no one was hurt in this incident.

I was quite lucky the cable never let go whilst winching, it was because as mentioned I forgot the first rule of leaving 3-5 wraps around the barrel. I only discovered it was broken when I went to roll it all out to clean it up and put it back on under load. The new cable I get will have a 2M Red Paint on the beginning of the rope so i dont forget next time.

Just a quick update, I ended up doing some ringing around and got a Rope Winch cable from Sydney Rigging, they delivered it on Thursday night and I just fitted it this morning in an empty car park. What can I say, the weight difference....it weighs literally nothing, compared to the steel wire cable. Plus this particular rope has a stronger breaking strain (7.5T) compared to the standard Wire or Warn Rope (5T) and comes with a second out wrapping sheath to protect the actual cable against rock, dirt, etc. No complaints here.

On another note, what can I do with my old damaged steel cable, does anyone (ie Metal Recyclers, etc) buy the cables, or is it just a very heavy and expensive paperweight?

You could get an eye fitted on each end and use it as a tow rope if you feel the need. I used to carry a bit from a busted Warn winch but threw it out as I know have a nylon tow rope and a winch extension strap that does the same thing at half the weight.

Yep tow rope is where old whinch cbles go to die or if you have an old snatch block laying around they also turn into a kick ass flying forx for the kids
