What would you buy if Toyota didn't exist???

A recent club outback trip had both a D3 and D4 in the group and both had the same issue with the air compressor for the air suspension not being able to cope with the corrugations and type of terrain and both overheated requiring the group to stop for 30 minutes for them to recover.

One of the guys in work has a brand new D4. First day he drove it in he was proudly showing off the ride height changing - went from park to normal then tried to go to 4WD height and at first only the back would come up then even that wouldn't lift. He called the dealer and was told that he would have to leave it to cool for at least 30 minutes - it wasn't as though he was just sitting going up and down continuously and it gave up. Then about two months later it just died (engine would only run in limp home mode) - had it picked up by the dealer who took two weeks to completely strip out the entire dash to eventually find the cables got pinched when the dash was factory fitted causing an intermittent short in the wiring. Sorry, didn't really intend taking this thread off topic but reverse engineering the question (what wouldn't I buy if Toyota didn't exist) But while I'm off topic, a friend's father has a D3 - the suspension gave up in the middle of nowhere due to a sensor failure.

After that story I will delete the D4 from my list and go the Patrol.

But then I would have to put up with the agricultural ride.

Landrover generally have a smooth slick offering with lots of desirable features, but later fail to deliver on reliability

I'd like a Land Rover Defender if Toyota didn't exist and I couldn't have access to a Prado or Landcruiser.
