  • Games to play in the car

Did a search and couldn't find anything on the forum... We've got 2 long days in the car from Melbourne to Streaky Bay and apart from 'cricket' and 'I spy' just wondering if anyone knows any games to amuse the kids (and parents) in the car?

    Cheers
    John

If and when you're driving through the country, try playing "HEY COW!" Taking turns, as you drive past a herd of cows on the side of the road wind down the window and Shout (at the top of your voice) "HEY COW!" Count the number of cows that stop grazing and look up and thats your score.... Keep a tally and count em up at the end of the trip to find out the winner!

Played this one from Longreach to and around Winton and back to BrisVegas. Kids loved it, Mum and Dad loved it, and a nice change as you can only do so much "I Spy" when out West...

Well we have four kids from 17 to 2. I can tell you that when you travel 2000k's in a go the dvd's are the KIDS entertainment of choice. They have their own dvd and an ipod touch.

I can remember the days before DVD's for cars. The trips were a nightmare with young kids. Now, the wife and I actually get to have a conversation.

                Anyway, each to their own.

                Any suggestions?

I was trying to think back to what we did when we were kids. But I think we just slept on long trips because it was so damn hot (no air-con back then) and also because of the exhaust fumes (carbon monoxide) that used to filter in.

I like to play the Quiet Game. First one to make a noise loses. That guarantees me at least 5 seconds of silence.

We have found audio books to be gold. Go to Bolinda (www.bolinda.com.au) and see what Andy Griffiths audio book titles are available. Enough kid-friendly ribaldry to keep the troops entertained for hours. My boys (8 and 11) are, shall we say, "performance tuned", but they will happily listen to these books for ages. There's many other kids titles too, so have a browse.

Thanks guys! In between numerous DVDs the kids will watch we now leave on our travels armed with a few more ideas in the armoury!

Have a safe, enjoyable Christmas to all.

                          Cheers

We play a couple of alphabet games. Start at A, find an object that begins with A, then move onto B. Once an object has been said, others can't use it. Watch out for k and x though, they're hard ones.

A different version, where it's more populated is to look for words on signs starting with A-z. Q and x ate the killers here.

These both work well with 6-13 year olds. Each game lasts for 30-45 mins, and you really see the countryside.

                            X1 for audiobooks.
X1 for Hey cow. Never heard of it before, but will be playing this trip for sure.

We used to play car cricket. Each player gets runs for cars coming past you in the other direction: 2 for a car, 3 for a car and trailer, 4 for a bus or truck, 6 for a semi-trailer, 7 for a PRADO. You are out when a red car is spotted. Game is suspended when going through a town.
