  • Whats your pick of Camper/tent trailers?

Curious to know what type of trailer people chose and why? How it tows, modifications etc. The reason I ask is because I have been waiting on the delivery of a Coromal Silhouette 4.21 pioneer, should arrive early November fingers crossed. If anyone has any tips, experiences etc in towing or setup they would be appreciated. I hope to take it to the Simmo, Cape, Gulf and lots of Islands.

      Hi KMK

We have a Kimberley camper hard floor. We can set up (flips open)and be in bed with in 5 minutes, which is great when you arrive at a destination or just want to pull up on the side of the road and have a snooze.More so when you have been driving for hours and its the middle of the night and all you want to do is go to bed.

The kimberley has a boat loader which un hooks very easily and raises and lowers it self on a hydrolic system.Even my wife can lower it.I dont have the heart to tell her its called gravity :P:P (sssshhhh she thinks she is helping :? ).

The kimberley is fully self contained with gas cooking 140 litre water tank, sink with 12 volt pump tap,3 jerry can holders and a outboard holder and storage area for things like camping equipment. We bought ours second hand from some one who had only used it twice. We saved just over 10 grand an it was as a good as new.

I will go out on tha limb and say this is one of the best camping things i have bought

          Hi Guys

I have just taken delivery of my All Terrain Camper and it is perfect. Towed it home from Sydney on Saturday and it she performed faultlessly on the road and at 110km/h. Gilbo, you are right it is a fair bit taller but then again it is also lifted 2" as standard and you can't see over the top of it through the back windscreen. I looked at a lot of trailers and I don't think any of them matched up in quality and build strength in my price range of $23K.

The price I paid includes the 17" steel wheels and Cooper 70 series ATR tyres $1290) as opposed to the crappy chinese 15" stuff that were to be fitted, oh and an inner spring mattress which arrives next week from Brisbane ($579). Matt, it will sleep 6 comfortably and already got ozi explorer out planning the first trip. Here are a couple of pics.

06 GXL D4D, 6spd, Snorkel, ARB bar, XS900 50w HID lights, 55W HID Headlight upgrades, T/bar, 7" GPS, QStarz data logger, 52L Bushman Fridge, Premier winch, Sandgrabbas, GME TX3440, AE4705 antenna, Scangauge II, Dual Batteries, Aero bars & rack, Drawers, 2" Ironman/Rancho/King lift, Under bonnet compressor, Black ducks, Voltage booster, Rear table, AVE TPMS,

            trailers

that looks like a good setup Jacto. My brother in law just bought one that looks pretty similar. I debated between a tent trailer and camper trailer for a while and ended up going for the camper. Hopefully it doesn't prevent me going to the cape with it. What is the weight of your trailer? Did the prado's rear suspension hold the trailer pretty level?

Hey Jacto ... nice looking setup.

              I still love my Shak

My Shak is 820 Kg dry and 1380 wringing wet. Tows like a dream.

I didn't like the sag with 4 yr old original suspension so I did 16,000 k's towing it with a set of Polyairs in. Perfect.

              Cheers

                hi there

no i stuck with std tent size and we find it plenty big enough, I'll have to work out how to do the photo posting.

one thing my mates wife doesn;t like about the all terrain is the height of the kitchen, you really do have to reach up to cook or do the dishes, so he's going to work out a way to lower it. good unit though. but mine all up cost $15k (demo model) so for $8k less i can get a whole lot of other toys.

one cool thing on the safari is the external tap connected to the water tank - comes in handy all the time.

one 'problem' is all the 12v sockets are smaller size (can't remeber the name) than cigarette lighter, so i'm having to convert all my 12v plugs over.

                will post piccies soon.

Sounds like the Hella socket ... more positive connection.

I was given some good advice before i bought my Pioneer Argyile SE,was to go and hire one. Here in W.A there are a few companies that hire them out so you can try before you buy. There are so many on the market there is bound to be one that suits your needs exactly.

We bought a challenger camper trailer. With water tank and on-board power and all awnings etc cost 17k. Know its not the flashest but pretty good we reckon. Optioned on shockies instead of poxy re-bound suspension. Tows really well, seems pretty light to tow. Really cant fault it. Will look at doing wheel/tyre upgrade before a trip up north next year but good enough for now.

We are looking at campers and came accross the Adventure camper.
They are a different design in the bed is a normal height and you do not have to climb to sleep.

has anyone had any experience with these?

We have a Quality Camper, it was cheap and is a bit rough around the edges but it has more than proven itself.

Personally I can’t see the point in paying too much for a camper trailer as most generally end up spending a large amount of the time sitting in the back yard (plus I can’t afford an expensive one) .

Our Quality Camper cost $6,000 new on the road and has been around Australia including the Great Central Road, Plenty and Donohue Highways and across to Fraser Island all without a hitch.

When we did our round Australia trip we travelled with someone who had an upmarket trailer and we travelled along behind them picking up all the bits that dropped off 8) .

We recently returned from a trip up to the Pilbara where once again the trailer did its job with a minimum of fuss. Its tare weight is around 450kg so it’s fairly light to start off with and on the last trip we travelled down some very narrow winding tracks with lots of dry creek crossings and it followed the Prado like glue.

Ours doesn’t have all the bells and whistles (but I am working on that) and it gets badly stone blasted after each off road trip but it does us nicely. It takes only a few minutes to erect as it doesn’t have need extra poles to hold up the tent, you unfold the canvas, and push out the outer bar on either side into position and lock them into place and that’s it once you’ve positioned the floor.

I’ve added three extra jerry can holders so it can carry 5 in total, added internal lighting and power points in the tail gate for lighting as well, and am planning to add a proper kitchen to the tail gate soon.

At six grand it can sit in my back yard with out me worrying too much about dead money.

Heres a couple of pics at Carrawine Gorge

And heres one of the camper all packed up on the road leading to Pingandy Station north of Mount Augustus (thought I added this one earlier?)

                            hi Matt,
I'll try and post piccies tonight but if you could PM your email address that might be easier.

I hired a trackabout (the grand tourer model) before i made the buying decision, the Safari is a very solid unit, very well built.

                            i got the following options:
                            - breezeaway annexe
                            - longer axle to accomodate prado rims (still to be fitted) - no charge
                            - 12/240v power setup in toolbox
                            - kitchen wall and alcove
                            - extra large toolbox
                            - Drifta kitchen/storage box/table package
                            - spreader bars (a MUST!!)

Safari also comes with electric brakes...don't know how this compares to mechanical in practice ?? it also has mounts for boat rack which can be added whenever.

another cool (and simple) thing i like is that the sink isn't built in to the kitchen (as it is on the all terrain), which means when camping the missus can do the dishes wherever she likes, she's not confined to doing them at the trailer tailgate. Which is always good as i like to make sure she's doing a good job of them whilst i'm sitting down having a beer....

i think all the campers mentioned are great, what seems to happen (as with me) is that people get very biased towards the model they bought
