Looking for advice for the best way to transport fishing rods and crab pots for our Cape trip. I've heard of PVC pipes being used for rods and am wondering what is the best way to attach them to the roof rack/basket and how to stop the rods bouncing around inside? cheers Jim

We use a 100mm pvc pipe, with brackets attaching it to the roof racks.
Remove the reels from the rods, and wrap the rods up in towels.2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,

If you've got a rhino rack you can get special brackets to fix the pvc pipe to the rack, they come in 100 and 150mm diam, I think I paid about $30 for mine. I'm sure the other roofrack brands have the same thing in their product range.
I used 150mm diam tube and went to clark rubber and bought some 150diam foam which I glued into the inside of both end caps just to cushion the rod ends incase they slide around due to any sudden stops/starts as some rods are longer/shorter than others.
Cheers

I use the Rhino Bazooka Clamps (http://www.roofracksuperstore.com.au...ct-detail.aspx) to hold 100mm PVC tube. I have attached my clamp to the ARB roof cage on top of my vehicle with a couple of small bolts per clamp.2009 White KDJ120R Manual fitted out for family camping and touring - See my Rig Build at http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27887-Smithy-s-Rig-Build

You could get some of these Quick Fist clamps (http://www.quickfistclamps.com/). The "Micro" clamps should do the job and you can mount them anywhere.
I've got a set of the bigger ones mounted on my roof rack for a long handle shovel. Easy to mount and do the job nicely. I'm going to get some more to mount a fire extinguisher and a fishing rod inside my car. You can order them through here (http://www.firetraderstore.com.au/in...gory&cat_id=88)150 Black GXL Diesel Auto, ARB winch bar, OME suspension, Snorkel, ARB bash plates, GME 3500, Recovery points, MT MTZ's 265/70, Wet Seat covers, Tigerz11 Roof rack & awning

I use a couple of methods, both involve PVC.
I have made a 90mm stormwater PVC rod holder the length of my longest one piece rod and have attached it to the roof rack using Rhino clamps. I have a blank on one end and a screw cap on the other. Painted black it looks pretty good, and I have two if I have to carry more rods for a boys trip away. I got the missus to sew me up a piece of soft fleecy lined material with compartments the length of the rods sewn into it - probably 6 or so (from memory), into which I slide the rods and then roll the lot up. I then feed this into the PVC tube and screw the end cap on. Rods dont rattle around and are up out of the way where they cannot get damaged. They can however get pinched, and if you are handy you could fit a locking mechanism to your PVC cap. On arrival pull out the roll, unravel, select the rod I want and fish...
Second method is pretty much the same, but is only for one rod, using 50mm PVC with end and screw caps, and a length of pipe foam insulation into which I slide my one-piece barra rod. I use this on the roof, but also when carrying my rod on a plane.
Neither holder will take reels, but I prefer not to transport rods assembled for any sort of distance anyway due to vibration etc. I have a rod holder on my bull bar which I use to carry assembled rods for shorter distances.

In a previous set up (and on a different continent...), I had a big PVC pipe, secured to the roof rack using clamps. I glued in a stack of thinner PVC pipes, just wide enough to take a single rod - looking a bit like a rocket launcher from a chopper. (I watched Rambo or some equally crappy drivel, after a few too many pints one night which gave me the idea). I then used an old pair of socks - one on the tip and one on the butt and inserted them - never had a drama.
When I moved continents, I bought a few quality rod-holders, which is what I use now, strapped to the roof racks and I bought canvas / polyester rod covers for all my rods, so I can travel far and wide with no worries that the rods get damaged. You can get them off eBay for $5 a pop. Like this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DELUXE-CL...item4aaa572800
The idea of a roll-up multi-rod canvas is epic! Get your wife making any more, Crows1 - I reckon you could retire!

I use a 150mm PVC pipe, 2 end caps, one fixed on, the other not. Both end caps have foam attached inside like the others have indicated.
My rods are 2 piece units, so I pull them apart and place each rod inside cotton rod bags. As there are only 2 of us travelling now, the PVC pipe just fits across the floor behind the front seats. Pipe sturdy enough not to break if anything falls on it.
My 12 foot beach rod is 2 piece unit, so the missus made a cotton bag for it, and it stays in the van. Before the van when I had an 80 series cruiser, I tied the beach rod to the grab handles inside the vehicle. The rod was out of the way and inside which meant I did not have to worry about thieves.
