  • What do you drink on a cold night around the campfire?

I enjoy port on cold nights around the fire, however living in Darwin, I clasify a cold night as 15-20 degrees . I'm doing 3 weeks around Alice Springs in August and need to come up with something a bit stronger to keep me warm when the temp drops to Freediculous.
I'm thinkin some sort of Whiskey, but would like to hear what others enjoy just in case I'm missing out on something good.
    Cheers,
    Stuey

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Its good to have a drink around the campfire but,,,," something a bit stronger to keep me warm when the temp drops to Freediculous." Alcohol lowers the body temperature so will not keep you warm, feels good but not warmer. I have a Jim beam or two or .. when camping .

Depends whether I have arrived by kayak or 4wd. If the former then a Bundy or three (to keep the mosquitos away) and a few bottles of red, carefully immersed in the ocean to cool to that perfect temperature. If I have the Prado and fridge then it will be dark and stormies, red (again) or rarely the odd beer like an Asahi Superdry. Red gets the nod most times though.

A bottle of Grandfather port usually warms me up around the camp fire on a cold night.

Jim Beam, then a reasonable bottle of red. If I haven't fallen into the fire by then, a liqueur muscat from Rutherglen in Victoria.

Usually just toohey's old. And if you believe the guy who got me onto it, it'll put hair on your . . . well just about everywhere, so that'll keep you warmer for next time.

I've found the problem with reds in real cold temps is the wine gets too cool - we were sitting around a fire a Noccundra and the red we were drinking was colder than the Sav Blanc the girls were drinking from the fridge!

That's what the fire's for, dunk the bottle in the embers for a minute to bring it back to temp. Mmm that reminds me of gluhwein....yum, before we moved to Qld we would always have an opening of ski season party at our lodge with about 100 litres of gluhwein being kept warm on the fireplace. That stuff rocks (when it's cold anyway).
