      Oh wait she's dead...... nup, no one cares....

            Of course we care. We are probably the only country in the world to have democratically elected to have a monarchy (albeit a foreign one) and thankful for the privelige, thank you Johnnie and Malcolm. Also grateful to the Poms for our constitution (well not exactly ours since it's an act of their parliament and they don't even have one of their own). Not yet ready to go it alone. Long live the little blighter.

                England just wouldn't be England without their royals but Oz will always be Oz with or without. Just what is the benefit of a monarchy in Commonwealth countries without the millions of dollars in royal attracted tourism?

                  Why do you think we would change? Our heritage is also Irish and later southern Europeans who have no allegiances with any monarchy. We're not all British descended although I'll concede some Aussies think we're still British till they turn up at Heathrow and have to line up with all the other aliens while the Germans etc waltz through without giving us a second glance.

                      I beg to differ. Aussie culture and attitude is practically the same as the Irish, not so much the reserved guarded demeanour of the English. I've lived in all three and that's my experienced opinion. As for the flag, not all Aussies are so keen on the borrowed British bit, least nowhere near the fervour of the British, American, French and all other countries have for theirs. Don't want to start any heated discussion and apologise if any monarchist feathers were ruffled.

                          I grant you that my experience of the three years in Yorkshire and Birmingham in the early seventies were against my Northern Irish accent in those troubled times (although most people seemed to think I was Canadian...still do) but the Irish living in England in the 50s and 60s before the shit happened, including my relatives all experienced the same attitude of the English I was alluding to, even the Scottish copped it. Almost a 'No paddies wanted' mindset. So we tended to stick to our own kind and with the 'Pakies' who copped it too. Coming here was a different planet altogether. We slotted in nicely with the natives who treated us like family. I got nothing against the English, got nephews and nieces born there and some of my best friends and colleagues are poms here. Just saying in my experience Aussies and Irish seem to get on slightly better than with the poms but there's nothing in it to squabble over. Now that's just my 60 odd year old opinion with us three cousins and others will beg to differ. Just don't want to start a holy war. As for the Aussies becoming Irish, not sure where you got that from. I think the census over the years indicates that one third of Aussies claim Irish descent which is a fair whack but most will be of good British convict stock and some of the ruling class thrown in. The challenges of the alien land would have bred most of the British out of them. The Irish were used to harsh conditions in the homeland so fitted right in. lol
                          [SIZE=1]Cheers Jim.

                            Why should they be so revered ? they originally got in that position by being the best, biggest and baddest leaders of England not by being good and saintly
                            History and tradition do have their places.... in the past !
                            Most ordinary people in the UK can take or leave them, its only in London (where the locals are looked after) that are royalists as such.

                              I think public opinion is so fickle (manipulated by the news hungry media). First they condemn the royals over the treatment of Di and the monarchy is on it's last legs. Then with time and a new generation they can't get enough of them.
