  • 120 series gone to Prado Heaven

So...we found out the hard way how strong the front chassis points are....

No this isn't a recovery gone wrong story!

We managed to write off our 120 series GX in a single vehicle accident, driving home from a friend's house at 1am. Going offroad in an urban environment is dangerous, I tell you! There no was no speed involved, but we didn't make it around a bend in the road. We went offroad at about 75km/hr, over the grass, over a 3 meter deep culvert, nosedived into the other side of the top of the culvert, kept going into a tree, then dropped down into the culvert.

Someone was watching over us, and I think we have used up the next 20 years of luck! The car is a write-off, Sleekr has fractured his spine in a couple of places, and I got away with a badly sprained shoulder, sterno clavicular joint, and crunched rib cartilage. Thankfully we weren't in a smaller car, the outcome may have been quite different. Sleekr's biggest complaint is that he can't ride his new motorcycle that he bought a week before the accident...nd the boredom of sitting at home not able to do anything!

Pics of the damage attached... One of the pics show why you should attach your recovery points to the chassis (they don't move)!

It has been 2.5 weeks since the accident, we have already lined up another 120 series 2004 GX on a private sale which we are picking up this afternoon. We considered getting a one to two year old prado, but with the proposed changes to novated leases we thought we would wait and see. We will keep this one for a couple of years and then reconsider things then. Besides, having an older vehicle we don;t feel so bad about a couple of little dings in it when out 4wding! It's back to mod time for us though, this new one only has electric brakes in it. We already have the new one booked in with our mechanic at On Track 4WD at Slacks Creek for the suspension and lift, dual battery system, rewiring the plugs in the back space & andersen plug. Then we have to get a UHF system, recovert points etc, and my stipulation is a new stereo! Sleekr and a mate did all of that themselves on the old one, but it is all covered in the insurance payout, so it is easier just to get the mechanic to do it in half the time and half the blood, sweat and tears. After driving Mum's '95 Festiva without power steering, with a very sore chest, I have a new appreciation for the luxury of the Prado!

Gee Esie, glad you and Sleekr are OK. Having been in a frontal collision with another vehicle I know how scary that must have been. I hope your recovery is quick so you can get back out on the tracks again.

I hope you are getting the new Prado checked over mechanically before spending too much dough on it though. I know you have insurance but it would be really upsetting to get all the mods done then find you have a cracked head or something major.

First and foremost, good to hear your are all ok.
Next, sorry to hear you are not perfect, but in light of the fact you are both alive and no bits missing, it could have been worse.
Finally, I'll grab some paint and a hammer, she will be on the road in a few minutes.

Can you raid the GX for any parts?

PS: If it wasn't a write off before, it will be once mlc gives it a cut and polish. Apparently.

Glad to hear your both reasonably ok and still with us which is the most important thing, you can replace metal but in regards to recovery points, I see the one on the passengers side has survived as good as the after market ones lol..... at least also your airbags went off and no doubt helped in you having even more injuries..... Cheers Steve
