Look, I am the first to admit that even though I have worked in the electronics industry until retiring a couple of years ago, I find this very disturbing.
Like most of us, I have put a lot of dollars into my vehicle but in my case I am still a Luddite when it comes to software.
With that in mind I was investigating some tracking options that could alert me if my Prado was "shoplifted".
Doing a Google search based on information from another forum I came across this website "http://techslow.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/stealthgenie-cell-phone-spy-software.html".
My idea was that I get a cheap phone with GPS, hide it somewhere in the vehicle and pay whatever a month for the appropriate data that was used.
Now I don't pretend for one minute that this is the only piece of software that is available but just the first that came up.
As I understand it, and I am open to correction here, a person next to me on a bus or train with this software installed can interrogate my SIM card and not only read my phone number but also record any conversations or SMS messages/Photos etc.
I would have no record on my phone that this was being done.
It can also log if I have changed the SIM card.
Sure, much of this is illegal, so is speeding but people still do it.
To be honest, I wouldn't be so paranoid if people stopped following me
Seriously though, I would appreciate other members comments given that much debate is being discussed about government monitoring, both national & international when it could even be your next door neighbor.
Yes, i Know Wi-Fi and whatever wireless system is used can be hacked but naively I thought that phone security was less vulnerable.
I probably need to look at getting some pigeons to send messages from here on in
