Thanks Crammy, yes they do run the Danfoss compressor like the Waeco's. Price is significantly cheaper for me to get the Eva-Kool. Just not sure if I should wait and see what the after Xmas sales bring this year as I think there may be some significant savings to be had all round.

That's my strategy... with the predicted downturn in spending, I'm sure there will be some top specials immediately after the Xmas rush.

Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

i got my waeco cf 60 for $940 with a bag, yeah it is the older model but it still has warranty and 240 built in, i find the temp readout very accurate, i checked it agains my digital thermometer and it was all good, i find the bigger size is more suited to me as i have 2 ruggies and i can fit more beer in it, and it uses bugger all power, went up the beach a while ago and checked battery voltage when stopped was 12.7 and after 12 hours of car not running voltage was 12.4, and thats running off a 650cca start battery, while the day temp got to 25 and night got to 12deg, so i reckon realistically i should get about 3 days max without charging battery, which is ok 4 me, mav if ya after a fridge when ya down this way check out all the camping stores of old stock that they want to clear, i got mine from amart glendale, if ya want to save a few bucks, but everyone is right in what they say, its a personal choice, they should make a fridge with evakool insulation(basically a fibreglass esky with a motor on the side), with the toughness of any engel, and the power drain of the waeco, that would be a pearler of a fridge. but it will always be the same arguement which is better, just like ford or holden, cheers samo

Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

Has anyone seen the new 38L plastic or resin skinned "Eclipse" Fridge/Freezers that Engel now make? Just looking at a BCF brochure now and they have them for $899 which includes a transit bag and handheld UHF set of all things. 3 year warranty too. Seen them in stores before and they don't look too bad and certainly weigh a lot less. Has anyone got one or heard anything about them??

Can't fault my 40L Engel so far. Silent as the grave and chills damn well even in a hot closed up Prado loaded with camping gear......

Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

Seems its the season to be buying fridges as I'm about to grab one too.

I've choosen the ABR Sidewinder as in my opinion it offers good value and features considering how often I will use it.
Comparing the ACTUAL (not advertised size) internal sizes of the different brands, the ABR suits me at a lot lower price per litre capacity than the "big two", not to mention the National Luna's etc.

The EVA COOL was my other choice but fitting it in the back with my other "junk" didn't work that well lol.

As with most things our individual requirements partially makes the "best" choice different, but i do believe the ABR unit is worth checking out.

Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

Just wanting an opinion, would you have a fridge in the back of the Prado without running a dual battery setup? Do they specifically need a dedicated power socket or is the rear power socket in the Prado capable of handling the draw from a fridge?

I see there is a pretty extensive fridge write-up in the January 2009 Edition of 4x4 Australia, which is now on shelves:

                        Mav,

Like so many things it depends on your intended usage, long drives, short stops or shorter drives and long stops ....

I would NOT fit a fridge without a second battery as I tend to drive to my camping spot then no driving till time to leave (or very limited)
With only a single start battery suppling power to the fridge too much chance of a flat battery come time to leave.

That said if you have solar panels, genset or similar charging your battery at a sufficent rate then you could proably be okay.

Having seen the wiring size used for factory power outlets in vehicles, I played it safe and fitted a 6mm twin core sheathed wire to my "new" power outlets from my second battery.

Less voltage drop, less potential for heat build up and a better running fridge etc because of it.

                        Hope this helps.

Our four year old Waeco CF40 has performed well for us, it has run off the standard Tojo rear plug in both my 95 and 120 series without a problem. I installed the Waeco fast charge set up in the 95 to re-charge the power pack and it worked okay for weekends away. Trips to Darwin and NSW showed the weakness in this setup over the years, so I am going down the redarc second battery route now. I would buy a Waeco again for sure.

Thanks for the info Leethal, I guess I will be having a dual battery setup fitted soon anyway. So, as I probably will not be camping in the near term due to the temps being too hot I reckon the fridge would be okay for the long haul trips coming up to Newcastle and back on the standard plug. Once I get the dual battery setup done I will run a new dedicated socket in the back.
