  • Re: CAR FRIDGE, WHICH IS BEST

I have a waeco 80l that was in continual use for a 5 month lap of OZ with both a mix of being put on 240 in the caravan parks and on the aux battery. It went well with the freezer bit chokas with meat.
    A couple of learnings
The 80l has 2 fans 1 sucks cold air in and 1 blows hot air out they need as much air around them to work properly or hot air is blown out then sucked back in, i had to flip the fridge around so the fans were at the back and then drive with the rear quarter windows open to keep getting the air changed out same if you left the car totally shut up and night it would be hot as in there in the morning.
While i do like my 80- and will not be giving it up any time soon if i had my time again and money was no object i would actually go 2 40s and run 1 as a fridge and 1 as a freezer as you end up with icing problems in the 80 as you are exposing the freezer bit to the air every time you get a beer.

For an extended trip get the biggest 1 you can afford as to get the savings you need to spend up big at the major centres so we had an 80l waeco in the car and a 50l that came with the camper and both were chockers most of the time
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

So I think that will be the go. The Engel I hired was awesome. Draws no more than 2.5 amps per hour apparently, where as the Waeco's draw what they need to get the job done. If this is true, I do not know, it was what he told me. Still new to the fridge game myself.
This is true - and it's considerably less than an Engel, while keeping a MUCH steadier temperature.

Engel have seized to innovate and have been beaten by the likes of Waeco and the new ARB fridges, just to mention two.

            • AJ120 - substitue "beer" with whatever you prefer. For MrsAJ120, this can also be "scones", "cupcakes, "chocolate"...

Edit: runs for cover... and suspects this thread will now get a second life.

                  To make Iced Tea perhaps?

I have 2 x 40L Engels, one 10 yrs old of which the fan has gone. $60 to replace fan for 10 yrs service not to bad.
The other one has the led light & temp guage, but looking for another one for camper. Love the engels but looking at something different as I want to be able to set the temp so I don't freeze the fruit & veg. Wife reckons the 2 will be enough for the trip but she wont compromise I want cold beer she wants fruit & veg not frozen. Simple answer buy her her own fridge and she stays out of my beer fridge!

                    • Howdy Steve

What I don't understand is the rush do dig it all up and ship it out. Get rid of all our resources without value adding, makes no sense to me. But hey I guess its going to make more fridges.

                      Cheers Adam

                      • Yeah mate its a worry. My wife laughs at me as I get so pissed off when watching some of these current affair programmes and to see our own farmers oranges and apples falling to the ground from their trees laying there rotting and where importing crap from over seas just pisses me off. Cant even buy a bloody fridge made in Australia any more ???? makes me wonder what our 3 year old will face in years to come...Cheers Steve

                        • This is an interesting question.I have an old Engil and it has never let me down. But the Waco is a dometic product which build all the Fridges for Caravans and the have been around for ever.So in that respect the Waco should be better.Like every one says it's a matter of price and the deal that you get when you go to buy one.

                              • I would recommend you look at a Bushman if looking for a fridge. So versatile - can be small or big. Mine works really well and feels like it is built to last.
