      Engel gets my vote.

It works with no hassles and the kids can climb on it and use it as a step...

Will be getting an engle as soon as the finance minister says we need one...

Which my guess will be after we go camping with people that have one and she sees just how great they are.

I have had a Waeco CF60 (60L) for about two years. It's currently getting fixed after, I believe, a freak power surge caused a fault.

While the Waeco was out of action we hired an Engel. I found the Waeco much better - the temperature stays steady with the Waeco but was all over the shot with the Engel. On paper, Waeco is much more efficient. And the Engels are far heavier/bulkier than the Waecos.

I know having your fridge in the repair shop is never a good look, but I do believe it was a freak incident that caused the fault. I would highly recommend the Waeco over the Engle, despite what many other people say.

My two cents, from my experiences...

I think both are fairly reliable, I just couldn't justify the extra expense for the amount of times I will use it.
Thats why I went Waeco, and of course I got a bargain which also helped.

While we're on the subject, what's a decent size? Would a 60L Waeco be too big for 2 people?

We'll be updating soon and have been looking at both engels and waeco's, the 40L engel seems about the same physical size as the 60L Waeco. As there's limited room in the back of the Prado we don't want to go too big physically but don't want to limit ourselves on cooling space either.

                Hi Crammy,
Before you commit to either, go and have a chat to the Refrigeration Mob in the small shopping/commercial complex on Sheridan Street just south of the Creek behind the airport, I can't remember their name something like Thermo###### .
My mate recently went in there when his old Engel failed and he had a very interesting conversation and viewing of a number of dead portable fridges in for repairs/scrapping.

                Hope this helps a little

Clifton, is it these blokes? I've had air con regassed here before on a previous car.

Crammy, have the 60 litre Engel combination box (have two hungry kids too) and it fits many a snack and cold ale. I will bring it along on the day trip so you can have a squiz, but with just two of you, IMHO a 40 litre would suffice.

You need to remove the baskets in the Engel and pack them with stuff to really appreciate how much you can fit in them, rather than just peek over the edge (if the missus tries to fit a lettuce in on one more camping trip but!!)

One interesting point - the 60L Waeco is more efficient (on paper) than the 40L.

I guess size depends on what you want to do with it (pardon the pun haha)

We lived out of our 60L Waeco for a month.

We have a 110L Waeco and have had it for a couple of years now. It is great for the long trips but a bit big for the day trips. We did a trip from Brisbane to the Hunter Valley and back a few years ago with a 60L Engel and the rattling nearly drove me crazy. It was the compressor 'dong, dong, dong' sound everytime we hit a bump. Put me right off the Engels. We spoke to a refrigeration repair shop and he said the Engels always do that, some just more than others.

Anyhow the Waeco has been good for us and would like to have a 40 or 50 litre for day trips.

                      Just my 2 cents worth.

Hey Hodgy, I'm looking forward to catching up.

Even though I've already got an Engel that needs an update, I'm still considering the waeco. As for size it'll definitely be somewhere between the 40-60L range. If it were the Engel I went for it would have to be the 40 I think, just because of the physical size of the fridge. If it were the Waeco I'm thinking 50L but could go to 60L! hehe

Geoff our Engel rattles too! It's the one thing I absolutely hate about it. Ours was that bad that the other day it sounded like we had a heap of crockery banging together in the back. It's pretty damn old though so I shouldn't complain too much... At least it still keeps the beers cold!

                          Crammy,
I'd be going the 60L Waeco, even if it might seem a bit big for a couple. I image you are planning to populate the back seats, and with the way that these fridges last, you mays as well get the bigger size as the price differential isn't that great.

                          Cheers,
                          Kevin
