Is that go/operate or co-operate?
Sorry mate bad joke.
The only thing I have heard about these fridges is that they work best on gas. They will work with the other two options just not as good and efficient.
You are talking about the 3 way fridge freezer aren't you?

I have a chescold and Engel. My old brown Chescold 39l must be 20 years old and still going. Runs great on 240, draws way too much on 12 volt, the beauty of them is the gas. Keep them level (I use a small round level the size of a 50 cent piece), and they will last for two weeks or longer on a 9KG bottle. A fellow member I camp with has two Chescolds (the blue and a green). The only problem is they usually won't freeze your fillets down like the other models mentioned here but will keep things already frozen even in the harshest Cape conditions.

I have a 12v/240v fridge which lives in the back of the Prado and a Chescold 12V/240V/gas which we take camping. The Chescold is an absorbtion unit which means it relies on heat and gravity to make the fridge work. So running on 12V or 240V will pull high current to make the fridge run because the electricity is heating up a resistance coil/heater. Also the Chescold needs to be as close to level as possible (I take a little spirit level with us), again because of the design the refrigerant has to drain under gravity for the firdge to work properly. We normally set our car fridge as a freezer when we set off for a camping holiday and have the Chescold in the trailer. When we get to the camp we fire up the Chescold on maximum and once it is cold (half an hour or so) then transfer the frozen stuff and then run the car fridge as a fridge. The Chescold runs well like this. Doesn't seem to use too much gas and keeps the frozen stuff frozen. After a week you might have to remove the ice and frost on the evaporator in the fridge because the efficiency of the unit falls if the evaporator is heaviliy iced up. However in this application it works really well but I wouldn't use it as the only fridge in a car.

I've had my Engel for years:
it's a 37 liter stainless steel. The only thing I don't like is the weight, it can be a pain to shift in and out of the car.[/img]

I've had a 40 Litre Waeco for just over two years now and very happy with it. They do consume less power than Engel - or any other 40L fridge for that matter, plus keep a more steady temperature according to a Australian 4WD magazine test a couple of years ago.

Sure, you can argue that Engel is metal, but that actually has its cons too as metal is a better conductor (i.e. poorer insulator) than the injection molded resin the Waeco is made out of. This also makes the Engel heavier and once my Waeco is full of beer... I mean... food... it's pretty damn heavy. The Engel would be even more so. Plus Waecos don't dent.

Then again, Engels do seem to be slightly better made overall, so I'd say they're pretty much in the same ballpark. And the new Engels seem to have an internal light now too. About time too!

Both do the job they're made for!

I've got a Downunder 50L bought from a TJM Megastore. Got the Danfoss compressor (handles well in the rough). We also use it as freezer when at home. All fridges are meant to run continuously or atleast thats what've heard from specialist in the field of fridges/ac's. Been nearly 3.5 yrs usage now, no trouble at all.

thats because the cf40 waeco isnt 40 litres.

from their website..

Capacity 37 Litres, Holds 47 cans

engel 40L

Capacity: 40 Litre (60 X 375ml Cans)

that was my deciding factor as i found it very misleading to call a fridge a CF40 (or now the CF40AC) and market it as a 40L fridge when it isnt.

Forget Litres as a unit of measurement ..... and go with cans

That Waeco should be a CB47 (Cold Beer - 47 cans)

which would make the Engel a LWB60 (Luke Warm Beer - 60 cans)

... and my big Waeco is an RCB143 (Really Cold Beer - 143 cans)

Cheers
