  • Camper trailers - Whats a good buy for $20,000

Ive been thinking about a camper trailer for some time now. Stumbled across this brand, http://www.backtrax.com.au/, which is being sold through tracktrailer (the people who make Tvan).

Just wondering if anyone has one or knows much about them. They have a fiberglass body and im not to sure about the AL-KO independent rubber suspension system.

Forgot to mention the top of the range off road version is about $20,000 plus on road costs.

    Hi Hoppy,

One of the guys I work with has an Adventure Camper, the Pilbara model and he swears by it.

The link to their website and the Pilbara in particular is:

    http://www.adventurecampers.com.au/c...re_pilbara.htm

I have been looking at campers as well and not sure if I want to go soft floor or hard floor at the moment.

yeah I am looking around a bit too, although I think the hardfloor sounds a better option for me.
I need to have a boat on the roof of whatever we get, so I am still looking for now.

        Hi Hoppy,
I have a camper trailer with alko suspension for two years now. Its been across from Victoria to W.A and to S.A. On the road it tracks well, and off road the trailer has been off the ground in some hairy situations. I cant really fault it , we carry just under a 800 kgs in gear. Perhaps the travel could be a little longer, but again the trailer works fine, maybe the addition of shockers could make it a little sweeterl
The other thing is maybe look at electric brakes and always secure its contents....they do bounce around in off road work.
        Cheers!

Re: Camper trailers - Whats a good buy for $20,000

Looking at getting a Challenge Camper Trailer for a few reasons. Not a bad set-up, and quality looks pretty good. Plus my neighbour is a joint-owner in the company and owns the local distributorship here in Darwin.

Anyone with any specific experience with one of these trailers?

I've already joined/scanned myswag.org, but can't find any real specific info there on this particular brand.

Re: Camper trailers - Whats a good buy for $20,000

Any camper trailer you go for look for a full chassis rail, not the half rail type. Much better for off road handling and wear.

eg: Kimberly, Ultimate, All Terrain and the like....

What do you mean by half or full chassis rail?

Does the half only go half way to the back of the trailer, and the full, all the way back?

Yep, a standard draw bar (or half rail) goes back to a couple of feet under the tub and is welded at this point. They should at least go through to front suspension mounting. A full rail draw bar is much the same as the chassis on a car where the draw bar goes all the way through to the rear of the trailer, the tub welded on top and the suspension slung fron the bottom of the chassis. There are arguments on both sides and it really gets down to engineering and build quality but I think it is generally considered that a full length, if done right, is a more robust design.

Re: Camper trailers - Whats a good buy for $20,000

We got our All Terrain full offroad camper (17 foot model) second hand and I can't remember the exact price new but it's somewhere around 20 large.

We had friends with an All Terrain and were so impressed with the build, space and versatility that we went for one. My friend got one after his mechanically minded brother recommended one to him after he saw how well it performed on a group cape trip a few years ago.

It's a soft floor camper so it's not lightening fast to set up but it's tall and has a lot of clearance. It's got some heavy duty (9 leaf) springs, a heavy duty chassis and axle.

I also like the look of the Complete Campsites for soft floors.

If you're very mobile or are a small travelling group (don't need as much in trailer storage) then look at a hard floor but they tend to be more expensive as well.
