    • It's amazing that at first nobody wanted to let on what their satellites could see . Now it's like a competition to see who can come up with the almost clear , biggest debris field , from a bunch of second rate superpower wannabees . Shame the yanks didn't tell anyone where it was 3 weeks ago .

Immigration Minister Morrison is proud that his government has achieved a milestone: 100 days without a refo boat arriving on our shores. Didn't say anything about all those arriving by plane.

Wouldn't be anything to do with the fact that everyone's Satellites/Planes & Ships are Cruising/Spying/Collecting data from the Indian ocean with world media attached to it by any chance would it?.. Lol

              Cheers

Didn't say how many attempted to cross either which might be a better indicator. Oh and it's monsoon season. But never let the truth get in the way of government spin

                • One wonders why so many countries are rushing to find this plane, and have deployed so many assets, including considerable defence asses (satellites, ships, submarines, etc) to find this plane when everyone says there is no hope of finding any survivors. Did the plane have something else on board in its cargo?

Mangosteens, at the price they are each these days I cannot blame them.

Fully agree but, one massive joint effort on a lot of nations fronts at considerable expense. Not forgetting the tragic loss to many families but there could be one silver lining to this, there seems to be a lot of mutual team work going on between many nations.

Yes, I encourage people to read this document. But this only really relates to SAR obligations.

See sections 5.5.1, 5.5.2 and 5.13 in particular.

Everyone has known for weeks that all hope for survival is lost if the plane crashed/ditched into the ocean. So this is not a SAR operation (ie distress or uncertainty phase). Rather it is simply a recovery operation. So my question still remains, why so much effort to recover and why is everyone falling over each other to get there first?

                          Still a very valid question.

"5.5 Termination and suspension of search and rescue operations

5.5.1 Uncertainty phase and alert phase
5.5.1.1 When during an uncertainty phase or an alert phase a rescue co-ordination centre or rescue sub-centre, as appropriate, is informed that the emergency no longer exists, it shall so inform any authority, unit or service which has been activated or notified.

                          5.5.2 Distress phase

5.5.2.1 When during a distress phase a rescue co-ordination centre or rescue sub- centre, as appropriate, is informed by the vessel in distress or other appropriate sources that the emergency no longer exists, it shall take the necessary action to terminate the search and rescue operations and to inform any authority, unit or service which has been activated or notified.
5.5.2.2 If during a distress phase it has been determined that the search should be discontinued the rescue co-ordination centre or rescue sub-centre, as appropriate, shall suspend the search and rescue operations and so inform any authority, unit or service which has been activated or notified. Information subsequently received shall be evaluated and search and rescue operations resumed when justified on the basis of such information.
5.5.2.3 If during a distress phase it has been determined that further search would be of no avail, the rescue co-ordination centre or rescue sub-centre, as appropriate, shall terminate the search and rescue operations and so inform any authority, unit or service which has been activated or notified.

                          5.13 Search unsuccessful
5.13.1 The search should only be terminated when there is no longer any reasonable hope of rescuing survivors."

                          • We're lucky that the search is federally funded - the state (WA) is broke and we would have pulled the plug after the first week.

                            • Why did they keep searching for two years to find the black box for the Air France crash?

There's a lot more at stake than SAR or recovery.

We also have to face the possibility of another country having bragging rights for providing the crucial break through.
