Reading comprehension 101. What does the document say, and what does it not say?

Note that this document does NOT say that the search SHOULD be terminated when there is no longer any reasonable hope of rescuing survivors.

It says that the search SHOULD NOT be terminated before there is no longer any reasonable hope. It is obviously up to the co-ordinating and participating countries to decide when that boundary occurs and how long after that the search should stop, and based on the considerable interest in the fate of these lost souls it is quite reasonable that the search has continued. It's not like one bloke went missing in the outback...

    • Depends on who the "one bloke" is.

How long did the search for Harold Holt go on?

      • I love these conspiracy theories.

Why did the Chinese only get brief signals?
Why did the Americans / Australians detect signals 300km away when the signals can only be picked up within 6km?
Were the Americans transmitting signals from a submarine to put everyone off the scent as to where the plane is really being stored?

        and on it goes...

HOUSTON has said that they were monitoring the signals from their own boat.

I would have thought you'd know about that ntp?

No, not a conspiracy theory, a responsibility of the involved nations.
I didn't mention conspiracy in this post. I just question the extent and fever around the search. With so many assets involved, like a race, false propositions, etc., it seems there is more going on than what is being stated publicly. Even with Air France 447, which involved the loss of 228 lives and where the aircraft's crash location was known, there wasn't a similar amount of assets or broad 'multi-national; motivation to recover the black box. The 'black box' was subsequently located some two years later, and they knew where they were looking to find it!

You cited this document, not me. This document is about search and rescue, not recovery or crash investigation. This is clearly not a SAR operation: it is at best a recovery operation with a subsequent investigation need. The chance for survival ended weeks ago. If you're suggesting that they are continuing to conduct a SAR 'because of reasonable hope' on the hypothesis the aircraft has crashed into the Indian Ocean, you are deluded.

I also never said that the search should not continue [reading 101]. It obviously should. But if you read my first comments, about Air France 447 as a similar example, the question I simply posed is around the extent of assets being used and the apparent 'race' to find the aircraft as if there is a prize involved. Like I said, one wonders whether it is the black box or something else that is driving so much interest in finding the aircraft first.

            • Come on, show some empathy. We have to give the grieving families some closure. Look on the positive side - all the time our boats and planes are thrashing around the Indian Ocean the refugees are keeping their heads down.

I did cite this document. It explains why so many assets were engaged at the time when there was a possibility that it was a SAR operation. It is only now with hindsight that we can say that this is 'clearly not a SAR operation'

The common interest of all nations involved is to find the wreckage and hopefully a cause for this incident. Trying to suggest an ulterior motive for the size and scope of the search is suggesting conspiracy theories. I think you know better than that, unless you are making a joke. If so, use some smileys.

                    • The air search has officially been terminated. Numerous ships, including Aus navy and survey vessels, are looking at a patch of ocean floor 800km long by 80km wide or thereabouts. It's only 6km deep though.

They're looking for it in the wrong place. A pilot found it off the coast of Thailand

                              • Seriously... the story behind this event is one that beggars belief.

Missing jet not in search zone: ATSB

Does anyone have any true idea of what really happened. No communications, no signals, no trace, no sightings, no wreckage.

I guess, when you have removed probable and exhausted the possible, what ever remains, however improbably, just might be the truth.
