Hi Guys, just reading this it seems that the alternators seem to be an issue. I was also playing in the mud a few months or so ago and the lights come on the dash and a few of the great people we went with from this forum had multimeters and checked the altenator and there was no charge what so ever. I managed to get home from Morriset back to Penrith, lucky I am on gas as well so flicked to gas turned the reserve tank fuel pump off, no aircon on, radio etc and managed to get all the way home. I thought well the alternator is stuffed got nothing to lose so I got the hose out on full pressure and stuck it in every direction I could into the alternator and as such gave it a flush out. This managed to get the light to go out and so far I have had no further issues. So is this going to be an ongoing issue whenever a 95 series like myn is going to go playing in the mud ??? I was trying to work out a way of possibly making up some form of guard for the alternator to try and stop some of the mud getting into it but dont think there is any way of doing it or is it the alternators age and klms. Mine has done 178k V6 3.4L . Regards Steve

Did mine under similar circumstances :x Was worth it for a fun filled day though
How long did your petrol last without an alternator?...we had 3 other cars all have alternator failure on the same streach of mud. 2 petrol prados made it about 8kms. The petrol 100 series made it home about 70km...
My diesel made it almost home about 140km...it was still running, but not changing out of first gear being an automatic...the gearbox didn't know what the engine was doing!
Fun yes....eventually....after I phoned the wife to pick me up & explain how her shopping trolley needed a little TLC...I'm just now able to talk about it without going into a cold sweat!
Steve,
+1 on the alternator - under very nearly the same circumstances.
Went for a play in the mud, all good.
Drove home, all good.
Jumped in the next morning, dash lights up and alternator not charging.
Grab the auto elec neighbour (4wd nut), who reckons its not that uncommon for mud to clog up alternators on all sorts of 4bys and whammo.
Empty half a can of wd40 into it, plenty of gunk comes out and guess what.....ALL GOOD.
As a cheap alternative to a new alternator, I'd recommend keeping a can in the Prado for such muddy occasions..!!
The V6 motor seems to handle quite a bit of water. This same Prado was doing far deeper waters on a different trip with me, and all it got was squeaking idler pulleys for a while until the heat from the engine bay dried off the water.
if ya gunna fo stuff like that black prado chick i suggest getting a snorkel as a good insurance policy
Yes Yes I know...... Snorkel is next in line on my list of things, hopefully will get it in the next couple of weeks and the insurance policy is good to!!
It was indeed a great trip and we had a lot of fun.
One interesting observation: we have seen many cars of all types and ages (of course mainly Toyota's and Land Rovers). Plenty of HZJ75/78, HDJ80, J100... but almost all newer cars were Prado's. It seems that the Prado is slowly becoming the car of choice for Sahara trips.
