    Re: A Good Aussie Swag

I'm going to swim against the tide here and tell you that the most comfortable night I ever had in the outback was in a normal swag, not one of those pseudo tents.

You can see the stars better too...

I'm looking at one to take back home with me and keep for several years. It will also be used in the winter months, so while I'm inside I will also have my 0 degree sleeping bag. All these models have zip open mosquito nets so I can still sleep under the stars and with all the king browns that will fir inside.

I have one of Mr Swagman's Classic swags - Double size.
        http://www.mrswagman.com.au/premium-classic.shtml
Works well as a traditional flat swag but has the option of being turned in to a mini-tent.
Mattress is better than I've experienced in other swags.
Quality is very very good and I expect the swag to last for years and years.

          Re: A Good Aussie Swag

my pick would be the mr swagman, burke and wills, as they have h/duty canvas, the oztrail mitchell i looked at had 10 oz canvas, it was nice and light but i prefer the 14 oz canvas for more protection for the elements and better wear and tear, but on the flip side the oztrail mitchell is right priced as well as the onland, so weather you want bang for bucks or just want the ducks guts the choice is up to you. cheers samo

            Thanks for the input.

The Mr. Swagman looks like the front runner, but is it worth the extra $200?

              Re: A Good Aussie Swag

I have stayed away from the "mainstay" suppliers of swags, and had mine made to my design by a guy who spent his life mustering cattle and sleeping outdoors, also now making swags, horse gear etc with his wife, now the years of horse riding, and rodeo riding have taken the toll.

Some of the things I dislike about a swag is if you have to put in poles, and pegs, buy a tent, at least you can stand upt o get dressed.

The ones I have [single and double] have a wire frame to keep the canvas off your head, velcro entry flap, window in the end, fylscreen, and roll up into the wire head frame, a bit like a gladstone bag. No poles, no ropes, no pegs, so i can use it in huts or on verandas etc as well.

I use a thermorest double in the double, ofr use one side of it for the single swag.

This pic is sort of how it works

If you want a cheap roomy swag that works, without spending to much, but will give you 5-10 years good service then the DUNE from Anaconda would be the go.

If you want more room for shoes and clothes bag, then I would say, for 2 poles, and 4 pegs, a Coleman cobra 3 or similar is ideal for desert camping more than a week.

                Thanks Darren.

One draw back to the Mr. Swagman is that it has 2 poles and it seems to hang down onto the person inside. I would love a custom made swag, but time and $$'s permitting says, 'no'.

                Thanks,

This is one of the best really, made in Melb for deer shooters, so its snow proof, water proof, windproof, 3 poles 4 pegs, waterproof bottom, windows each end, rolls flat and small, has plastic section to stand on in socks and flap to cover shoes for dew or rain.

I am looking at one of these for myself at the moment.

Interesting concept, though if it gets moisture, hard to fix, and the down would end up lumpy, they would be heavy, and would roll up large.

Having tried most, the thicker, the worse they are with more air normally, making for the air, especially in the cheaper versions to go to the head and feet, where there is less body pressure during the night.

That is what makes the thermorests so good, the good quality foam, and the air being "trapped" where it should be.

I use a base camp double thermorest, in the swag, for 2, and the single, but leave one deflated and folded under the other.

We use a big double air bed which is 600mm high when inflated for base camping, velour non slip top, and put a lambswool on top of it to stop any body heat transfer into the air bed, and our 2 sleeping bags zip together to make a double doona.

That would be a problem if they actually had down in them. You can get sleeping pads with down, but the manufacturers advise to never inflate them with your moist breath for that very reason. I guess they would be useful in extreme climates, but you would need to carry some sort of pump.

The Pacific Outdoor seems to have been collecting a lot of followers, mainly with hikers which is my interest in it. For longer term vehicle based camping, I'd probably go with one of the 4wd mats.

For hiking though, it's always a trade-off between packed size and weight vs comfort...

We bought an OzTrail Mitchell Double (not sure about price, but it is well worth it!). Best thing ever. Has a really thick mattress, fully lined with flyscreen, and the cover is fully waterproof as well. Admittedly they are heavy (well for me they are!) and do take up more room, but having a good night sleep out in the bush is definitely worth it.
