By the looks of the gravel around the chairs, they have been there for some time, but we have only been there once, so it might be a temporary thing. (or maybe someone flogged them the day you were there)

The Leighcreek Coal train down to Port Augusta for the Power Station? That is the only train I can think of that goes through there. I think it is a privately owned line

We camped at the Parachilna camping ground and had ate at the hotel. Just after dinner was served there was a commotion in the bar and we were excitedly told by one of the other patrons to come and see the train pass. I think the whole town watches it! Not that it isn't an impressive train, it's 3 locos, ~170 cars, and 10,000 tonnes of Leigh Creek's best, every day. That's a lot of coal. We heard the train pass when we were at Leigh Creek a few days later, but it was well after dark that day.

Lofty picked the Hotel. I was then going to post that I don't recall it looking like that since when I worked for the company that ran the Power Station and Coal Field I used to drive up to Leigh Creek a bit, and for the life of me I don't recall what the Prairie looks like. I actually never stopped there or drove down from Leigh Creek for dinner.

As to the coal being Leigh Creek's best. Well yes but it's brown coal. More dirt than real coal but make it hot enough and it will burn :wink:

Did you know that they made special wedge shaped bricks to build that lighthouse. Pretty neat.

This looks/reminds me of the roadside stops heaidng towards WA out of Ceduna. Sort of near the whale watch place but I can't think of the name.

Not near Ceduna. Correct State.

It's a quite isolated spot. Very flat country, but not near any ocean.

The flies were dreadful.

Yep. It's the only 'official' campsite close to Lake Eyre.

This is the place where an Austrian couple bogged their vehicle in the summer of 1998 and tried to walk out. One turned back and waited in the car (and survived) There's a little memorial where the other died. Given the time of year (December) and the absolute lack of shelter I was quite surprised how far she made it along the track. According to the Coroners Report she was carrying about 6.5 litres of water with her when she died.

Anyway, the place is called Halligan Bay, and there are plenty of fences around now, although there is nothing stopping you from trying to get bogged at other points along the track.
