    • I think I remember Stan and Mav mentioning Boggy Hole as being out in NT ... a place we can have a look at during the '09 GTG.

      Cheers

            • Palm Valley is a good choice Muzza. I wish i had loged on sooner..

Boggy Hole is not far from there it is on the dirt short cut to Kings Canyon from Hermansberg. ( but it takes longer) better than the Bitumen any way. Oh and by the way i was bogged there had to get a Hilux to tug me out at least it was a toyota......

BUGGA!! Finally one i knew and beaten by the sharp shooter Muzza (assuming he is right)

Looks like a top spot, i mentioned Palm Valley to Mav in one of his threads re the GTG next year, he thinks it may be to far out of the way for a side trip, looking forward to seeing similar.

                          • getting warm....

Was a Durack property...but not in WA and not in QLD.

                            Now in a National park.

                            Popular 4WD destination.

The Station building has a bit of history.

Jerry Skeahan came to grief only after a short spell on the Station. He broke his leg whilst working in a stockyard at Auvergne. After setting out to ride to Katherine, a messenger caught up to him to tell him he could take the Bradshaw launch to Darwin. The boat anchored overnight near Port Keats and Aborigines crept aboard and murdered Jerry and three other white men.

In 1910 Harry Condon, one of the first managers of the Station was tricked into walking down to the river in the night when Aborigines speared him in the back. He escaped back to his hut and got a message to the police. Ten days later police with black trackers and a local stockman pursued Condon’s attackers raiding their camp and shooting two of the ringleaders in the fight that ensued.

In 1919, the station manager, Jim Crisp tried to ride down and capture one of a group of Aborigines he suspected of spearing cattle. He was speared in the back, fell from his horse and died immediately. A party of police, stock boys and trackers went out to arrest the leaders, identified as Monkey and Emu. One was shot during this search and a police party shot another six years later. Charlie Schultz found Crisp’s grave in about 1950 and marked it with flagstones.

In 1922 the manager, Jack Ashworth and the Station cook, George Turner
was accused of brutally murdering an Aboriginal named Peter at the Homestead. The victim was chopped up and burnt. The cook was acquitted due to discrepancies in evidence presented by Aboriginal witnesses and the manager fled the area before the trial.
