Kenny it is indeed Mt Coree - if you look closely you can just see the fire tower on the summit. A very interesting drive up to the summit but not that difficult. This pic was taken just after my first ascent. Have been back 3 times since.

Thinking Mt Coree, did a bit of driving in the Brindabella's in Jul/Aug but could get a good look at Mt Coree due to weather!

Indeed it's an interesting place. I worked at Marla for a couple of years in the very early 80's as the resident mechanic. The town then consisted of the police station & a couple of houses. At that stage the motel & bar had only just been built. The tyre cage in the workshop was used as a holding cell it the local police were waiting to transport someone.Some of the miners from Mintabie used to come in to the bar on Friday & Saturday nights, so we got to know a few of them quite well. As one of the guys at Marla did the supply run out to some of the Aboriginal communities including Fregon & Amata, I went with him on a few of the runs (my first time operating a road train, & also a great opportunity to see parts of the country that few white Autralians were able to access at the time). On a couple of runs we continued through the hills to Ayres Rock with parts for the power station that was being built to supply what would later become Uluru Village.

Over to you Grumpy - it is indeed Mintabe. Just about 35 kms west of Marla.

The story is fantastic of how it developed and was hidden from 'whites' during the 30-50s is very interesting..

It is in APY lands. Me and my brother visited with a permit (bought from the cops in Marla) in May. Only about 13 opal miners left. We were tipped off to visiting it by the 'underground Anglican Minister' in Coober Pedy who said if you want to see how opal mining used to be done go to Mintabe. Well we did.

It was fascinating. The police sergeant came out and gave us a personal tour.

Possibly around the Mintabie area (it's been over 30 years since I was last there, so only a rough guess).
