Tis' not fair. I thought a minimum of 4 pics would suffice as the initial post, and that would have meant that I was the king of the castle for more than 2 posts. .
well....I don't know if I've nailed it......a shot of some uplifted rock could be any number of places in the McDonnells......but when i first viewed Gosses Bluff from the lookout about 20kms out...it took my breath away...I was astonished......it is a huge shatter cone and even now it is big......when it was formed they reckon it was 20kms wide and 4 kms deep......what we see now is just the base of the shatter cone after 3-4kms depth of erosion after all these 100s of millions of years.....much like when we look at Ayers Rock and the Olgas we are just looking at the stumps of a great underground sedimentary rock fold which has eroded some 4 km in depth. the difference in Gosse's Bluff is you can see the shatter cone even in rocks you pick up. it was one mighty explosion...they reckon a comet did it.
