hi

if I am correct that is a beautiful location (and nice rig too) near Cossack, Settlers beach.........is that Jarman island and the historic Jarman island lighthouse.

Muzza you are correct again. It is Settlers beach & Jarman Island it only about 10mins from here we live.

The lighthouse, a prominent landmark feature, is synonymous with Jarman Island, Point Samson and Cossack. The area was first visited by Captain Jarman of the barque 'Tien Tsin'. The Island took Jarman's name and the township originally his ship's name.

Jarman Island marks the entry to the old abandoned Port of Cossack and the wharves at Point Samson. The port was established to service the pastoral leases that were opening up in the north west and the pearling luggers.

The life of the port was short due to the silting up of the tidal estuary and by 1902 it was apparent that Cossack could no longer function as a viable port. By 1904 a new jetty had been built at Point Samson which then gradually replaced Cossack as a port. Later the facilities at Cape Lambert (Port Walcott) took over in the 1960s for overseas iron ore carriers.

In the 1950s the quarters and adjacent buildings were stripped of useful material and abandoned. The lighthouse was turned off for the last time in 1985 when the Cape Lambert lighthouse became operational.




Went for a quick spin out there yesterday to make sure the brake controller was working correctly.

well, Cossack and Point Samson are lovely spots....and the best fish and chips in Australia can be found at Point Samson!!!

Believe it is now some sort of farm stay on the Port Gregory Road between Northampton and Port Gregory/ Kalbarri. Was built by convicts if I recall correctly. Pink lake your talking about is Hutt Lagoon.

yes indeed.....very correct.....it is Captain Sanderson's house built in the 1850s next to the Lynton Convict Depot.

Port gregory in the background and Hutt Lagoon which they farm beta-carotene from.

Port gregory is famous because during the war it was rumoured they heard the gun battle and saw gun flashes out to sea of the Sydney and the Kormoran and it was also shelled one night by a jap sub. Must've scared the lone fisherman there!
