Had a crack at this under my gate...it worked well, except the water that that used to make the mud pools around the pebbles as the clay underneath doesnt let it drain...

You completely miss the point of a forum, or even the word "forum".
This thread piqued my attention. I have drainage issues in my yard that in heavy rain can lead to my shed flooding. There's a deep, privately owned storm drain near my place, so I'm looking at asking for permission to cut a hole in that and also lay a trench drain in front of the shed. I'd link the trench drain to the storm drain using ag pipe, but surround the ag pipe with crushed rock and covered with geo fab to keep the rock from being filled with silt - as well as sealing up the storm drain hole.
