I went down to my local SES unit last night - I wanted to find out more about volunteering including levels of commitment, what they did, how the call out system worked, etc. I had called in advance and been invited down.

To be honest they put me off the whole idea. The manager was very full of his own importance - I believe he was relatively new to the role which might explain it. Apart from asking why I was volunteering he didn't ask anything about what I might like to do. When I said I was well qualified in First Aid (Senior & Advanced First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation and Remote Area First Aid) he asked if I was a trainer and when I said no he completely dismissed that.

Maybe try another branch if it is not too far away?

Exactly the same as you experienced.

When I went to the city I obviously was too far away from home to be in the CFS so thought SES would be an option.

Their attitude sucked. "What would a young bloke know about anything" pretty much.

I'm glad it's not just me - I don't think age has much to do with it either, I'm not exactly a 'young bloke'

Buying a new roof rack (Tracklander) and getting a bonus kit including jerry can holder, spare wheel clamp and awning clamps by purchasing before end of May only to find out there's a back order on all that free stuff. Oh, and I'm still waiting for the ladder. I head off Friday week on big trip too.

Our FESA/SES vollies do a great job and mostly unthanked by the people they are trying to help. Many are older people working for mining outfits and other companies that tolerate their frequent callouts. The younger people don't seem to last very long because they're always getting called out on weekends to locate missing prospectors. I guess it becomes wearing after a while and they turn their phones off during the weekends in order to get a break. The smaller centres don't have SES so the guys from the likes of Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Merredin, etc are always getting the callouts.

In August I'll turn 34, this will be my 17 th anniversary as a vol in VicSes. In that time I have had many roles including Controller for 4 years. I have been extremely active, we have a unit of mixed ages, genders and background. It is extremely hard to find people who are prepared to put the effort into training and put back I to their community, even harder to find people who can turn out during the day. So when people come along with some skills and a desire to learn its important to harness that energy, it helps the units evolve and continue to run. However, not many units have the management structure to harness that energy which is disappointing.
Different states have different roles and responsibility, in Vic we are the largest provider of road rescue. This seems to keep us busy, not always a rewarding task. I've just returned home from a debrief from a rescue we performed yesterday where a young boy was killed. I much prefer a happy ending... Don't we all! The past few years I have been in a team that has represented VicSes at the world and Australasian Road Rescue Challenges in New Zealand, Hobart and Next month Canberra. Here we have learnt world leading skills and taken them home to teach others. I also seem to end up teaching chainsaw skills, and rooftop and storm response.

It's not for everyone, but I've made some great mates through my involvement, learnt and taught new skills all whilst doing my bit for the community.

Things that tick me off......? people that join my ship with the worst flu you can imagine, then consequently a week later 3 more guys have got it, then a few more get it a week later and then almost to be guaranteed that when I fly home in a week I will take it with me and spread it to my family! If you are a casual worker, I would almost forgive you, as you need the money, but the person in question is a permanent employee, who has sick leave and still gets paid. Keep your filthy germs at home where they belong!
