    I was half correct...

Oh god, one of my pet hates as well!!!

Roundabouts are bad enough in a car, you want to try it in a truck, you are really trying to read the traffic flow and adjsut your speed / gear so you keep maximum momentum with minimum disruption to traffic flow and then some moron indicates a right turn, so you stop only to find he was going straight ahead. As I said, not such a biggy in a car, but try working your way back through 16 gears and hauling 45 tonne Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh!!

          • Nearly died today.

Was driving to pick up my daughter from school when I drove over a crest and began a downhill descent along a two-way (80kph) section of road. I was the lead vehicle having just driven off from a set of traffic lights. I could see a row of vehicles approaching from the other direction, which had also come from the next intersection about 4km away.

Next minute, one of the rear vehicles pulls out into the on-coming lane as though he is going to try and overtake. This will be interesting I think as there isn't any gaps between the cars ahead of him and worse, not much distance between me and him, although he could just pass the car in front of him if he really tried even though it would be stupid.

But no, it is clear he isn't trying to overtake nor is he seemed to be concerned about my vehicle heading directly for him. I quickly realised that something was wrong.

I immediately activated my high beam and began to break slowly, knowing I was on a downhill descent and there were a bunch of vehicles closely following me behind (without much of a gap).

The on-coming car keeps approaching and then starts to break and wobble in his lane as clearly the driver is now starting to panic.

Realising he can't pull back onto the correct side of the road (blocked by all the cars he was driving alongside), he spears off right onto the grass verge but is struggling to control his car or work out which way he wants to point it. By this time I am applying heavy emergency braking but can see the d!ckhe@d behind me hasn't realised what is occurring. Soon after I started my heavy breaking fearing an imminent collision (not knowing if the lunatic driver was about to spear back onto the roadway in front of me), the fool behind locks up his vehicle.

Covering my rear vision mirror while also watching the on-coming lunatic, I realise he isn't about to drive back onto the roadway and I spear left while the fool behind me slides past my rear end under full lock-up with smoking and screeching tyres. The cars behind him were similarly braking too!

The oncoming lunatic's car spears past my vehicle which, by this time, had one wheel on the dirt and my driver's side wheel just on the edge of the bitumen to allow the d!ckhe@d behind slide past.

The lunatic's car stopped about 50m past mine, meanwhile all the cars that just observed this near fatal crash just keep driving on. Even the d!ckhe@d behind me and the cars following him. They just drive off as though nothing happened.

A few deep breaths and I get out of my car to talk to this driver to see WTF was he thinking. The driver gets out holding his chest as though he is now suffering a heart attack. He is a bloody international student. He keeps saying sorry and is clearly distraught realising that he has just avoided death. The young student says he thought it was a dual-laned carriage way. He says after he drove off from the traffic lights, and as he couldn't see any other cars ahead of him, he assumed it was two lanes. As my car came over the crest, he didn't realise at first until it was almost too late. Clearly, he had no idea and was genuinely upset and sorry. In his car with him were two other students, both speaking little English. Neither wearing a seatbelt, the one in the rear sitting between the two front seats.

Their car was a Lancer. Mine a Toyota Kluger.

We would definitely have hit head on as there was really no other option. It is remarkable that we didn't collide or crash. He only just fitted past me on the grass verge. I imagine I would have survived... but not too sure about them though had we hit because as soon as I would have hit them... the d!ckhe@ds behind me would have forced my car over the top of theirs.

This is the view of the area (as I saw it) where my near death experience occurred:

Glad to hear your still alive, sounds like a pretty hairy situation. Everyone is lucky that at least one person in this situation was concentrating on the job at hand.

I imagine a few amber fluids tonight just to keep the nerves in check

              • A link in another post reminded me, Myswag.org ticks me off!!

What is with there password criteria, I can't log in for some reason so I get the email giving me a temporary login, but their password criteria is just insane, nothing that I put in meets their stupid requirments, and whats more they don't tell you what their requirements are, they just let you try a password and then reject it.

I feel much better now I have that off my chest.

                Cheers Andrew

                • When you get a wheel alignment from Ian Diffen and less than 2000km later your front tyres are cactus. Took the car to National Tyres and they find that the left front is set at negative 14.6 degrees total toe and the camber adjusting pins are less than finger tight. I'll bet it was the fault of the junior who tried to bolt the steel wheels on using my alloy wheel lug nuts.

                  • When you remove both batteries to access the rear of the headlight assembly to replace blown parker bulbs. Then you put it all together, hook up the electrics, reprogramme the radio, clock and windows only to discover one of the LEDs isn't working. You then spend over half an hour trying to get to the right hand headlight from underneath through the radiator opening, cutting your arm in the process. If only my arms were about 10cm longer. But now I have parkers.

                    • When you ask the local fabricators to make a bracket to mount my 2nd fuel filter and all they say is "We don't do that, ask the mob down the road" and you get this 3 times.

You then go and see how much it cost's to hire a mig, gassless (which is crap) costs $82 a day and we will throw in the welding helmet... Gee thanks.

Does anyone know who has a mig in Darwin I can use for a carton of beer? I can even bring my own angle grinder... Failing that I might have to hit up my ASM at my Army Reserve unit and see if I can use theirs...

                      • Moreton Madness

I was waiting to get on the Micat at Tangalooma yesterday after a few days on Moreton Island. The beach was narrow as the tide was not too far off high. The cars waiting to get on were all lined up as far up the beach as possible leaving a space for cars leaving the barge to get by. All was going well until this maniac in a BMW X5 comes off the barge flies up the beach with 2 wheels in the water and sprays about four cars behind me. He must have then realised he needed to go the other way so he does a 3 point turn (mostly in the water) and comes back giving another salt water spray. At one stage he had all four wheels in the water. Last seen heading towards the Tangalooma Resort.

                        • It really ticks me off when people pull out in front of me from a side street onto a highway so that I have to slam my breaks on even though there is no one insight behind me. Why can't they wait a few more seconds for a clear run.

I find immediately turning on my hi beam and staying on the horn as I barrel up their arse makes them accelerate faster and probably think twice about doing it again.
