  • Do you take any form of personal protection out bush?

A sensitive topic I know but I was wondering if anyone bothers taking any form of personal protection when travelling in remote areas, especially when camping overnight?

I have been thinking of whether I need to take a firearm along even if only small calibre.

cant say i ever have been in very remote areas, and firearms open up a can of worms and legalities, and i aim not to get into trouble, if the need arises, there is always go to the toolbox, bars, screwdrivers etc, and there is always the good old maglite, lets hope it never comes to that.
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

You're right though .. it is a sensitive topic ..... I leave the firearms at home ... but I do carry a shovel ...

The screw in handle has an excellent grip, nice weight and a beautiful balance.

      There's also a 3/4 axe.

.... and if there's ever a real drama ..... I can throw the missus at them and stand back and watch as she performs a spleenectomy through the top of the head

I have travelled extensively often by myself for more than 20 years and slept in some really questionable places and never had any trouble I could not talk or walk away from.

If you are with kids I always camp away from pubs or groups of people hitting the grog.

Stuff the chainsaw, it takes too long to start. I use my 'nail gun'

I have never had any trouble either when out bush, I guess there is always those unfortunate people who come across a whack job who just wants to give grief. But what about wildlife such as crocs etc, I realise you should not camp close to a northern region river bank for this reason.

A firearm is not my first preference either.

You probably have more chance of running into a wacko in town.

Re Animals. Unless you are using a large calibre weapon you will just be pissing the croc or boar off, besides I doubt you would have time to run and get it and come back during an attack ?

Best bet is to select a safe campsite in the first place.

Wish I would have read this topic before heading up bush queens birthday weekend last year, it would have made me think of taking some protection away with us. 8)

But never did my partner and I think that our peaceful weekend away camping by the river would turn into us getting jumped by 20 or more blokes and a couple of girls :?

Well my partner happened to find instant protection with a metre long, pretty thick, tree branch. 8)

I found protection in grabbing the attackers weapons (tarp poles) and beating them with their own weapons. 8)

Might I say, we came out a bit sore the next few days with all the bruising we suffered. My main injuries were from getting held down by at least 5 males while the girls kicked and punched me in the back of the head, and my partners injuries were from getting smashed all over his body with the poles, and to top it off they threw a hot log from our camp fire into his face, chipping 2 teeth, knocking 1 out and leaving a scar on his chin. :x

We havent been on holiday since but plan on going away this christmas, and no doubt that this time we will be taking some form of protection to help us just incase we come across some trouble makers again. 8)

that sounds very disturbing, black prado chick.

did you report it to the police ?

                    We sure did!

Gave them descriptions of the cars and as much details as possible.

There is more to the story after it happened though. I found 1 of their cars on the internet (Myspace) as it was very different looking, and I was trying to work out the names of the attackers before I went to the police about it, when..... 3 of the attackers died in a car accident!!!

If that isn't karma I dont know what is.....

That is a scary story! I'm guessing they were partying too hard, too long and juiced out of their heads?

We shouldn't let ourselves be put off by the experience of BPC and her partner, however having said that I always have a spare axe handle nearby just in case. We have never had any problems nor have we ever felt uncomfortable in remote areas, but these days the number of whackos in the world seem to be increasing so a few simple precautions are probably worthwhile.

We have just returned from 3 weeks in central oz and I am happy to report that we meet only nice people on our travels. We had 2 nights at Ruby Gap when we were the only people there. It was magnificent. We felt completely at ease even though you are in a pretty spot.

The tragedy is that we are even discussing this topic.

                          Cheers

Yep Ruby is a great spot for camping but it too can get pretty busy at times. We were there two weeks ago and there were people everywhere.

I guess times are a changing and it does seem that there are more than the usual one off whackos out there these days.

I must say BPC that is an extraordinary story, you guys must have been scared to death. I am not sure that I could have come out of it as well as you guys did.

It was very scary for us both but its been over a year now so we're slowly getting over it.... just a bit of a reminder when I look at my partner's scar on his chin and his missing tooth (which is getting fixed next month).

I am just glad that 3 of them are unable to attack anyone ever again...

But 1 thing that peeved me off about the incident is that there were 3 other groups of people camping in the camp ground when the attack happened and not 1 single person tried to help us, I guess they enjoyed the show.
