Just had another look into the rules, for WA you can have them fitted, but it is recommended they are removed when not in use. QLD would most likely have similar rulings.

Don't think any one would care if you fitted them for the trip.

Re: New Standards For Pedestrian Friendly Bullbars.

Is there any particular rod holders that fit better than others to the Sovereign Bull Bar? I have roof rails with cross bars and the cross bars are a fair way back on the roof line. Do standard rod holders work well with this set up or is there a particular type that I need to get?

Try these for your cross bars http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCateg ... rs_54.aspx

Re: New Standards For Pedestrian Friendly Bullbars.

As soon as I heard the Pedestrian Council was behind this I had a big laugh. These are the same guys who want electric & hybrid cars (Toyota Prius, etc) fitted with speakers that create the sound of an engine so that pedestrians can hear them coming...

My bullbar is there to protect my family and investment (my vehicle) from all manner of road hazards, including unfortunate/drunk/pre-occupied pedestrians. I comply with all relevant legislation and regulations. Why should I be targeted by this single minded group (which probably receives government funding anyway)?

Hopefully we can build a better mouse trap before this rubbish gets onto the national news... Groups like this are already gaining momentum in European countries with cars being designed to be "Pedestrian-Friendly".

I like Mav's comment about how many lives are saved by bullbars. Is there a lobby group for disenfrancised and victimised 4WD owners??

Paw, I completely agree with you!!! Down with the pedestrian council!!!

Re: New Standards For Pedestrian Friendly Bullbars.

Those Toyota Prius' are friggin quiet it's true. I was out walking the the streets with a GPS for work picking up all our drainage grates. So I was on the road, but keeping an ear out for cars. *HOOONNNK* ARRRGHHHH!!!!!   A Prius had hummed up the road behind me without a whisper. I should pay that guy to drive past the Pedestrian Council office right around lunchtime..........

The trouble is that there is no data on lives saved. If nothing happens...... then people assume nothing has happened. When in fact something has happened. Said Pedestrian Council heavyweights have thought twice about striding across the road when they saw you coming..... at 50 km/h. The accident never happened, so no data was collected. So then, the Heavyweight Walkers Association drags all their Doom data out from their diabolical cellars. And what have we got to say in response? No studies are done when nothing happens.

What would be interesting, is how many accidents involved cars with bullbars fitted. How did the bullbar occupants fare in comparison to the Prius with roof mounted subwoofers? Are the bullbar occupants at fault because the Prius people are in hospital? Are you at fault because you are alive and others aren't. Depends on the accident of course but, you can't be blamed for being smarter in this world. You can't be blamed for wanting to protect yourself and your loved ones. Life has it's ideals, best seen through rose coloured glasses, and life has it's realities. Reality is that the world isn't perfect, and if you want to survive in it then you have to be at least a little smart.

If you live life with rose coloured glasses then sooner or later reality will mow you down. I live in the real world. I fit a bullbar to my Prado.

Re: New Standards For Pedestrian Friendly Bullbars.

Of the few pedestrian hits in my town in the last 10 years they have all be normal cars. The fourbie with a bull bar has never been mentioned.
The resultant injuries have been a few deaths, a few serious injuries and 1 paraplegic. AFAIK.
Most have been hit and runs with one of the fatalities running over a drunk leaving a social gathering in a 60 zone. Another one ran over someone sleeping on the highway.
The majority of pedestrian hits have occurred on the bad side of midnight where there is alcohol, drugs, speed, and youth involved. Most youths dont drive fourbies so the bullbar equation is removed.

As for how many lives are saved, how can you put a number on that one. - but lots.
In Mt Isa a lady hit one of the riverbed people one night who just walked in front of her car. - just didnt see the car with lights on and driving on the bitumen. The group pulled the driver out because she stopped to see if things were OK. The driver spent weeks in hospital with severe injuries. The pedestrian ended up dying too.

If you are in isolated places and hit something with a bullbar you get shaken but can continue. Without one you stay there and wait for help, hoping you have enough water and time in summer for your saviour.
The cost factor too could be incredible including towing, no vehicle for ages, etc. It becomes a necessity for our remote communities.

In crashes fourbies usually create more whiplash problems and the likes rather than structural damage like normal cars.

In conclusion lets look at the risk score. How many pedestrians are on the road everyday. How many get hit? How many times is it a bullbarred fourbie or does it not really matter? How often is a pedestrian strike a fatality?

If this group banned pedestrians walking after 10PM then they would get a much better outcome but it is more sensational to just blame one minority group than all the public.

I don't want to get in trouble for starting a new thread. I was just wondering if anyone knows what the best rod holders are that fit a sovereign bullbar.

My bulbar is pedestrian friendly if you don't just step straight in front of it with you iPod in your ears while reading the paper while crossing the road . I'm getting sick of flat spots in my tyres .

I recently read that the new Volvos will have pedestrian friendly airbags installed in the near future, so that if you collide with some dickhead walking on the road, the airbags on the front of your vehicle will save the pedestrian from injury!

Ill give that statement a big plus one!

The smarter is the the starter!

I tend to disagree as the new laws on public/passenger and car safety "are" coming because the government said so and they will be enforced wither the general public like it or not and the manufacturers will follow wither they like it or not!

The only problem here (Or should i say advantage) is that smart bar has cornered the market first and got a strong foot hold and the market and rest of the world has taken note and those who are slow on the up-take will loose... Im confidant the other competitors already know this and it will take more than the die-hard colt followers for them to win or stay at the top. (They as in steel/alloy bar manufacturers).

                          Cheers

I guess the smartbar manufacturers from a logic point of view have already worked out and know that the now old 120 series is/would already be fitted with the old type bull-bar and that no one is going to pull there old bar off for the new bar and if not fitted one yet they would probably fit the old type bar as it will I'm sure be dropping in price as no one will soon want them when the new laws come into place and steel/alloy bars become illegal like the old plow type ones are now!

obviously when the new safety bar standards become law the already old fitted bars will be exempt from the soon to be new laws until eventually phased out.

I would guess they are focusing on the new model releases and designs as that is where the money will be and Ancap safety is there priority as I'm sure this is there main selling point of view strengths.

Ancap is a big selling point as Prado's big selling point is the fact that it is the only rig in its class that has the 5 star rating... I'm sure the steel/alloy bar would compromise this rating when installed to the rig as they don't crumple (Within reason) or absorb energy like the poly's do!

Here is a good link to cruise through

'Banning bullbars' has already been tested and has failed.

Airbag compliance on bullbars has already been tested and that's why they have a compliance sticker.

                              Can we move on now.

It's irrational emotive statements like this that not only diminish your cause but also lowers your argument.

I just accept that there are two sides to a coin, that there are idiots in life and natural selection means that the silly ideas (and people) ultimately don't survive the test of time.
