  • 200 series balancing act..

they r a bloody nice drive but i would stick with the prado, at least if ya scratch it or ding it jo will forgive you a little more, and besides you will have to start all over again with the 200 and it is a far side cheaper than a 200 for accessories.
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

    That sorta makes it a 100g 4wd..

I looked at the 200 series too but couldn't justify the extra expense.

This was another reason why I didn't choose the VX or Grande.

The cost differential from the Prado GXL means more money left over in my pocket for other things... especially extras for the new Prado.

        But they are nice! 8)

I just dropped into the local Toyo dealer that I use. Had a real good look over a new GXL. Got the kids in the back, folded up the dicky seats, checked out the cargo area room, took it for a drive.. ect..

Well, I am alittle dizzy. About 86g on the road from my local joint. I would expect to burn at least another 12/14g in decent barwork (front and rear), extra fuel tank, winch, HID driving lights, real tyres, underbonnet compressor, deep cycle battery, cargo barrier, fair dinkum suspension, in dash GPS system, ect ect...

That sorta makes it a 100g 4wd.. bloody hell. I wouldn't be game to drive the bloody thing anywhere off road for that sorta coin..

          Yeah, I am still spinning....

Yeah expensive but they get bad fuel economy! A supplier at my work just bought one a couple weeks ago and he drove just under 1000km and filled up 160 litres. He was spewing when I told him that I would have used 60 litres less if that we my prado.

I totally agree with you. They may be roomy on the inside but ugly as a dogs bum on the outside! And suprisingly sit alot lower then a prado as I had one parked next to mine yesterday.

I traded my 120 GXL with 70k / 5 years just over two months ago and really scraped to get the bottom range of the book value for the year / spec. The only accessory was a tow bar, the car had never been off road, all Toyota dealer services and looked original underneath and in the engine bay.

Still, it wasn't a bad residual at 47% after 5+ years and I didn't have to worry about getting roadworthy's or going through a private sale.

Edit: I've just had a look at the Redbook trade-in values. Holy cats is all I can say, the trade-in values have dropped $5500 in 3 months since I traded mine (Mar2003 build GXL)

Correct me if I'm wrong but the GLX comes STD with the extra tank its only the VX and Sahara that don't. And with the VX and Sahara I'm sure that you can order them now with the extra tank but no sun roof.

Without considering the rugrat issues and only the financial, the prado was significantly cheaper to service, run, purchase and had a higher potential residual value and second hand market demand. But for peace of mind with kids in the back I'd go a 200 without a second thought.

Your missus would probably say no but have you had a look at the 70 series station wagon, the GXL is still very commercial but not that much more than a prado GXL. I can only comment on storage room in the rear, not the kid comfort aspect but I can fit at least 4 more pelican cases and other crap in the back compared to the prado. These come with the option of front and rear factory lockers and sorry to say knock the playdo out of the ring in the off road ability stakes, too bad the on road ride is comparable to a horse pulled buggy.

If only toyota made the prado at least as wide as a commodore/falcon so you could fit three kids seats or booster seats (if these are still the legal requirement) it woudl be better, this would probably take more sale from the 200.

Anyway PradoGXLV6 if the 200 aint bigger enough you could always go with one one these.

"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

Spot on. However it is still 45 litres less than a prado.

                          Re: 200 series balancing act..

I had a drive of a 200 series V8 Turbo Diesel when I ordered my new Prado "just for the hell of it!) and whilst the acceleration of the car gave me a woody for the following 2 days  , an extra 20 odd grand difference is hard to justify.
The new Cruiser is a bit out of reach for the average blue collar worker!

                            Re: 200 series balancing act..

Like some others here, I too have crossed to the dark side and was tempted by the greener grass...

I found the ride to be exceptional, and the KDSS seemed to know exactly when to be sports car stiff or cloud soft. It was simply amazing. As was the grunt from the V8 diesel... The sound that emanated when the needle swung north was akin to a large bear clearing it's throat. Enough to scare Patrols off the road.

I spoke to a trusted Toyota service manager who told me that they are having some issues in relation to high oil consumption on the current crop of D4D V8 twin turbo engines and they don't have a fix yet, but are working on it. She actually talked me out of buying one until the next generation of 200's as the fix is likely to not be a retrofit item. They apparently also have issues with body/suspension sensors when towing heavy items (large boats/caravans).

However, nearly $90k for a slightly bigger Prado?? :? That said, I spoke to a nissan dealer about comparative sales (due to the patrol being significantly cheaper) and he can't believe that 200's are still flying off showroom floors. Regardless of KRudd's increased LCT. I would like to see a base model 200 (similar to the Prado Std) that gets rid of the Bling that people like and keeps all the bits that everyone wants at about $65k - $70k.

Ultimate vehicle in dreamland would be a Prado with KDSS, some extra mumbo from the engine and decent standard head lights!

The major problem facing the 200 is the "clucking" noise caused by faulty tail shaft. Many have had their tail shaft replaced or modified. The gxl TTD AUTO is also known to stall (engine shuts down whilst driving)

I think it's wise to wait for the 2009 batch.
