  • Tregg Hitch too tight

I have just witnessed an interesting situation where a Prado owner, not a PP member so far, was helping out his son and fitted a towing ball to the top of his Tregg hitch to tow the son's camper trailer a short distance. Seemed like a good idea at the time. However, when he came to hook up his own camper for the journey home, alas the block would not go into the hitch. Push it in? Tried it. Hammer? Tried it. File the top of the brass tube in the poly block? Tried once, twice, three times. File the hitch itself. Back up the Prado.... strape, the hitch does its own machining and in it goes. Sounds like a new hitch will be needed with those fine tolerances..

They are a b***h to get in at the best of times, let alone one in this condition.

I am so glad that I have given up my AT35, a great hitch as they go, for a Hyland.

Personally, I would have removed the Tregg from the hitch tounge to mount the tow ball direct to the tow bar as intended.

      Hyland articulatiom

How does the Hyland compare with the treg and the others in its movement? I have fears of it coming off the tow ball? What about the risk of the ball snapping at the neck, something I've witnessed before where a hitch has "grabed" on the towball.

The appropriate solution all around would have been to remove the hitch and use the ball on the tongue, but thta is not what he did...

The Hyland hitch is great. It goes on smoothly and easily with the car at any angle, which is why I went that way. I have never heard of a ball breaking. They are rated to 3.5 tonne. It fits completely over the ball and neck. Ball grab only occurs, I believe, if the hitch is tightened too much. Graphic grease is the way to go rather than a tight hitch.

          Snapped tow ball

The tow ball that I saw snap was originally conected to a 12' tandem trailer with a full load of redgum firewood. The empty trailer probably weighed more than 1 tonne and the firewood your guess? The combined weight of trailer and load must have been over 3500kgs. It just snaped at the neck and then at the chains and carrered of the road. Luckily nothing was coming down the road in the opposite direction!!!

            Re: Tregg Hitch too tight

What he did Martin was bend the top tongue down, because the Treg is designed to take the weight on the bottom part of the "U" section. He could probably bend it back, but that would most likely weaken the unit.

A new one isn't that expensive.
