Re: Car Wash hints & Tips

Man I vote Chippy's method!!!

What the heck do you guys do to wash down the roof of your rigs?? At the moment I'm standing on the running boards a with a hose and chamois and getting frigging wet in the process. Then as I move to the rear I step up onto the top of the back tyre and give it the treatment. Because I'm so close to the action though I seem to get a drenching also :? .

I had the underbody protection done when new. Seems that the dust really loves to stick to it though. If I now look up under the wheel arches I see a nice reddish dusty coating that wont seem to clean up no matter what the heck I do. Almost seems like the underbody coating was sticky and the dust has glued itself on. Anyone have that problem?

IRON-PAWW, why worry? The dust is just trying to help the underbody match the Flinders Red of the duco!!!

All too true NTP! It's just that I spend a good 20 mins washing all the dust off. Then another 20 or so cleaning all the brake dust off the alloy wheels. Then another good 1/2 an hour polishing the bullbar and at the end of it it's all starting to look damn good. Except for the wheel arches!! RRRRRRR!!!! Maybe I just keep the rest dirty to suit...........

Is there any wash that is as good, but, leaves the polish on?

It's too hard putting on polish without taking it off everytime I wash the car.

I have been using CT18 and using Meguires Wet Look to polish it. Wet look to too expensive to keep washing off.

So, wadda you use for a normal wash that I can still spray on or use via my Karcher (the karcher detergents are crap)

Carwash - do's and donts

Just wondering if I can still go through a carwash now I have a snorkel fitted? Also should I remove the UHF aerial?

Re: Carwash - do's and donts

I do both...
ie. I still use car washes but I use the brushless ones. The operators tell me I don't need to worry about the UHF aerial but I still swap the full aerial over for the stubby.
Had the snorkel fitted last week and Mike, the mechanic, said there is nothing you need to change (re: habits) because of the snorkel.

cheers, I almost went in the carwash today but panicked and decided to clean the car at home, the old fashioned way (well I used a jet washer)
I was parked under trees all last week and the car was covered in birdcrap.

Re: Car Wash hints & Tips

There were some threads on metal polishes a while ago. I polish mine about once per month depending on how "dirty" it gets. The problem is that practically anything will mark a nicely polished sovereign bullbar. Just letting water droplets dry on it will often leave watermarks or some type of mineralisation behind. After trying a few metal polishes, I really can't go past the Autosol liquid metal polish. I also tried Meguiar's NXT generation All Metal Polysh, which isn't bad, but looking at the bar in direct sunlight I thought the NXT didn't do as good a job. There's hardly anything in it, but I thought the NXT didn't produce as smooth a shine as the Autosol if that makes sense. Now what that could be is that I've used Autosol mainly since day one and am now used to the finish it produces, NXT produced a slightly different finish and to my eyes it looked off. I really must say that it took a good couple of polish sessions to get the whole bar taking on a decent shine from new. When I first picked the Prado up the Sovereign was already suffering in a few places with the shine really starting to come off it. The more I polish it now though the better it seems to look, maybe each successive polish leaves the surface that much smoother. One thing I've thought of is that if you keep using one type of polish the metalwork might become "conditioned" to the cutting agents in that particular polish. You change types and the metal surface might take time to "adjust" to the new cutting agent before it really starts looking any good. Just a theory though.

I think any one, including brasso will do the job. However NXT and Autosol are specifically automotive metal polishes and are supposed to leave a protective layer on the metal surface to stop it dulling quite so quickly. I have also heard of people polishing their metalwork and following it up with a normal polishing wax to leave a protective coating.

Just did mine again today as it happens.

Madkore you can find it in most Automotive accessory shops because the brand has actually been around for quite some time. You've got the stuff that comes in toothpaste type tubes which is like a thick paste. That's ok but I find it quickly clogs up your polishing cloth. Best stuff is the liquid polish that comes in a squeeze type bottle. Can't say I've seen it in K-Mart but I wouldn't be surprised to find it there if I looked. Both the SuperCheap and Repco stores near me (Osborne Park) stock it along with 2 or 3 other polish brands including the NXT. I've seen the toothpaste tubes of it in some service station shops too, but you'd pay a bit more buying from there I'd reckon. You'd almost certainly be able to buy it online too if you searched around a little I'd think.

Re: Car Wash hints & Tips

Heres a tip for those with a 90 series (not sure about the 120). On mine I have found that all sorts of stuff runs down the roof gutter towards the windscreen and it can get clogged up in between the windscreen and gutter trims.

If you stand at the front of the vehicle and spray a hard jet of water UP the plastic gutter trim beside the windscreen, leaves, mud and anything else that run down there will be washed out. Its quite surprising particularly if you have been parking under a tree.

If your really careful, you can prise the gutter trim off exposing the channel which makes it a lot easier to clean. I found a small nut had gotten stuck on the drivers side channel and had completely blocked off any run off. There was a huge mixture of leaves and mud stuck behind it - just waiting to start rusting.

Having a snorkel on the other side also presents difficulties as it restricts access to the trim.

Check it out, you may be surprised whats down there.
