  • IT talk - WiFi

My purchase this weekend. The old modem was getting a bit dated and was having some issues trying to connect, so I figured I'd upgrade.

I just wanted one unit so I replaced the aging Netgear WGT624 108Mbps wide area WiFi with the version 2 belkin N1 Vision.

The N1 Wifi doesn't run at the 108Mbps (not that those speed were achievable when you were more than 10m from the Netgear) but the N1 has heaps better reception and distance. It has great reception through double brick and has usable signal about 200 metres from the farmhouse. This maybe a curse if your neighbours are closeby.

The hardwire RJ45 connections run at a claimed 1 Gbps with some new algorithm collision detection thingy that seems to work quite well. It has a nice little display and three pointy aerials on the unit too.

    So far so good.

    Hi Spurio,
MY old Netgear DG834G also dropped two of its LAN ports so I brought a new Belkin N1 vision dual band WIFI router as I use a hardwired Gigabit network plus Wireless G/N for Laptops, as you have described the reception on wireless G and N is streets in front of the old Netgear I am very happy with the Belkin.
I normally setup lots of networks for mates using Billion modem/ routers but thought I might give the Belkin a run so far so good.

Ehhh? Whats with the "What the" NTP?

Guy's I've been thinking about a wireless setup for my house as currently we have nice blue network cables going all over the house. We have a cordless phone setup though and the salesman warned us when we bought it that if we ever got wireless internet we'd be in trouble. Apparently the wireless internet signals interfere with the cordless phones? Have you guys found this to be the case??

Yep .... the cordless setup used to mess 'big time' with my wireless.

So I gave a sparky mate a hand to run 300 m of data cable through the walls and dropped a data point into each room.

          Had no hassles since.

I find I can also fire up my new laptop and it picks up 4 wireless connections in the street. Two are secure and two are not

          Cheers

Aww geez! Well I'm not going to fit out this rented place with network cabling! Damned If I'm giving the landlords something for free!!!! Think I'll just put up with the blue cable going up the hallway. The cordless phone is too damn convenient to get rid of.

So let me get this straight! If you connected to an unsecured network you could get free internet and leave military secrets on someone else's PC?? Scary....! :?

              Re: IT talk - WiFi

IP - depends at which frequency your phone runs at, many run at 2.4ghz which happens to be the same as many of the home wireless systems. The N1 shuts down if no-one is logged in so only interferes when someone is online.

Some of the newest wireless systems run in the 5 ghz wavelength.

Heaps of people do not have secure wireless connections. I know a couple of people who do a fair bit of travelling and just drive around every town they are staying in until they find an unsecure network to log on. It is now a matter of driving around to find the fastest connection.

If you are maxing your current network connection with big transfers, Network cable is still the fastest consumer available transfer medium.

I have a Dlink router that runs wifi and cordless phone and have had no trouble at all.

Also run ethernet cable to an Apple airport and stream music to the other end of the house.

Ahhh now it makes sense NTP. Looked odd!

Ok so all I need to do is make sure that the cordless phone and and the wireless network run at different wavelengths? Checking my phones it looks like I've got 2.4Ghz gear. So all I need to do is find some wireless networking gear and router that does not run at 2.4Ghz? Then make sure I secure the network. Thought there must be a solution as surely many people have cordless phones these days. Cheers for the heads up guys. I'll add wireless gear to my ever growing list.

                        Re: IT talk - WiFi

Just had a quick look around and Iron Paw, I would suggest you change your cordless to 5.8ghz then try and find wifi equipment with that range.

The 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n standards all used the 2.4 GHz ISM (industrial, scientific and medical band). This is a licence free band for which individual users are not required to have a licence. As the band is available for WLAN solutions, virtually globally, this means that items such as laptops that use Wi-Fi are able to be used in many countries.
as far as I can tell at the moment, only 802.11a runs on 5ghz, however I did read that 802.11n is dual band 2.4 and 5.1ghz(do not have confirmation on this at the moment, will continue looking)

My set up. 5.8ghz cordless phone - 4 hand sets (do not know why, only two people live in the house). ADSL 2+ is controlled via a DLink DSL-G604T Gen II router. If you have a few computers to hook up and only one printer, I would recommend you find a wifi router with print server built in (has a USB port on the back for a printer to connect to, allows all computers to use the one printer)
