  • Best Bloody Meal I've Had Section?

Like most on here I like my food and a beer or three

We live in a country that is know for its country pubs and eateries. I have visited many country joints that have been more than welcoming in hospitality, service and have gone well beyond the expected service.

To get some interest and money back into some of these joints how about a section on "the best bloody meal I've had at ...." a country pub, take-away tin shack, or dodgie dave and his fifth thousand varients of salmonella food caravan ..... the rules are simple.

1- Must be a small one off, unfranchised joint, preferably in an off-beat location. Please NO maccas, kentucky, hogs breath, or RSLs, Leagues Clubs, etc...

2- Must be a country pub, motel, take-away, tin shack and not be located in a city and NO the ettamogah pub on windsor rd doesn't count.

3 - It also must be a place where dress regulations are pretty relaxed and kids and dogs can run amuck and have fun

4 - The place must not be poxy tourist (aka Byron bay hotel) or overloaded with pokies

5- It might be helpful to give directions if the town consist of more than two street and if sleep/camping is available out the back, or any other helpful regulations/hints such as you can't sleep within 100m of the front door of the pub

Aust is a big country and I know there are some great joints out there some thing like St Albans Pub, Uki pub, The Channon buttery, the Gundy Pub, Laguna Wine Bar (aka the Drinking shed).

Possibly not what you are looking for but I have to say that the best Indian meals I have ever had are at the Standpipe Golf Motor Inn on the western side of Pt Augusta in SA. The place is an old sandstone house with a relaxed feel, no real dress code and fantastic food. If anyone is ever in the neighbourhood then that is the place to eat.

All the good family run take aways that I knew have long since folded and gone the way of the Dodo, thanks to the Maccas and co.

A favourite amongst the WA PPers would probably be the Quindanning Pub. Fantastic food, great atmosphere and beautiful setting.

This may suprise a few, but the hamburgers at the Nullabor Roadhouse were something else. Had to go back in and compliment the chef. Been through three times in the last two years. Hopefully cookie is still there.

            Bellingen Buttery

When doing the pacific hwy, Brisvegas to Syddniy, of late I have been stopping in at the old Bellingen Buttery which is just south of Coffs Harbour. You take the bellingen/dorigo turnoff and follow it almost into Bellingen (10kms) on the right just before you get to town and on the hwy side of the golf course the old buttery has a beautiful cafe.

They do a great lunch and coffee in the cafe there. Heaps better than the Mc/tucky/jeans/bp/shell roadhouse on the hwy.

Has anyone been to Finlay's in Kalbarri? The fishing guy that converted his fish processing sheds into a type of eating house? The weirdest joint I've been in but the Finlay guy himself cooks all the food and has a good yarn with you when you go up to the "kitchen" to get your food. Had some damn good fish there a few years back. However, the last time I went there we had this fish sort of goulash that really wasn't all that good.... I hear recently there was some trouble up there. Something about old Finlay firing off a rifle into the air to scare off some hoons or something.... If you haven't been there then definitely go next time you're in Kalbarri, it's real bush kinda eating.

Also had a good night at Finlays a bit over a year ago. Need to get there quite early though as was popular.

Heard somewhere that the BBQ started during a pilot's strike when they had seafood that they couldn't fly out so had a big fry up for the locals! Whilst talking about pilots, we did a fantastic flight from Kalbarri out to Abrohlos (whales, wreck site of Batavia etc) Pilot landed for us and still kicking myself that didn't have my rod and plastics as fish that surfaced for bread dropped from pier made my heart miss a beat

One of my "Best Bloody Meals" was a rump steak at the Cow Bay Hotel about 6 or so years back. The proverbial 'half a cow' with a mountain of frys etc. In combination with a few cleansing ales, was the perfect end to a day poking around the Daitree.

Pokies........what the heck are they???????? Wa dunt have nun of thems over ere..... :?

If in Augusta in the SW corner of WA, and looking for Fish & Chips, its gotta be the Colourpatch Store. Drive thru Augusta township, down the hill past the pub, turn left into Albany Tce, and they are at the mouth of the Blackwood River
Local caught fish, shark, and cooked just perfect.
Then head across the street to the park to eat them, and can let the kids go mad on the lawn and the playground that looks over the river

If in Busselton WA looking for Fish & chips, try Codrocks on Queen St. Pretty sure they won a best Fish & Chip award a couple of yrs ago, and they deserve it.
Then down to the foreshore at the Jetty, and eat them on the lawn outside the other shop that pretends to be a Fish & Chip shop.........I feel another thread coming on.............

Anyway, need to ring ahead during holidays at both places
                    Cheers

On the Mackay - Eungalla Road do not pass through Pinnacle without stopping at the Pub (the Clubhouse of the Cricket Ground is closer to the Pub than it is to the Toilets--Convenient).
Speciality is Steak Pie with Chips and Rich Brown Gravy washed down with a Schooner of Beer ---AAHHH Highlight of the Trip.

Whenever we go down the South Coast to Narooma we try and make sure we drop by the Braidwood Bakery. Gets real busy sometimes but their pies, chunky steak or pepper steak (pretty hot) are the best around...and their custard tarts are to die for...none of this yellow dollop of gelatin infused nonsense you get in a lot of places - proper old fashioned baked custard.

Not really a meal but the best service and coffee i have had for ages.

If you are in SA and heading towards Victor Harbor/Goolwa from Adelaide, stop at the Mt Compass coffee shop next to the public toilets on the left as you enter Mt Compass.

A few weeks ago i called in to grab a take away for myself and the wife while she did the toilet run with the kids. It has become so normal to get crap service that when you get good service it comes as a bit of a surprise. The young lad (all of 14ish) behind the counter greeted me as i walked in, asked "what would you like today sir?" took my order for two take away coffees and relayed it to his big sister (all of 16ish) at the coffee machine.

I started looking around at all the venison sausages and yummy nibbles etc. From initially ordering two coffees i ended up spending about $50 on dips, biscuits, venison sausages, hot chocolates for the kids (which came with a free biscuit) etc. The girl on the coffee machine knew where all the produce came from, pointed out the gluten free stuff, recomended the butcher down the road for bacon....

The shop is owned by the parents, who employ their kids during the holidays and weekends. I was raving about the service to anyone who would listen for the next few days. Top little business.

Around the sticks where I live there are a couple of places which may be of interest. for those seeking a challenge I can recommend the Buxton burger at the igloo roadhouse. Another favourite of mine in the 'big kev' steak at one of the cafes in warburton (victoria) - it will fill the plate.
