well we all know that sand comes in many varieties, from rock hard to well almost quicksand , where is the softest sand you have driven on, the softest i have driven on is 9 mile beach south of newcastle, my first car was a lwb zuke, one day i had 31s down to 8 psi and i had trouble getting anywhere, was a very interesting drive to get anywhere, especially 1 dune where it took me 10 goes to get up, but we all know how to drive a zook with a big 1.4 ( mine was bored 60thou) flat out, but 31s take the sting out out small motors. cheers samo

Re: softest sand ya driven on
I'd have to say it would be Indian Head bypass on Fraser Island a couple of years ago, everyone was getting stuck.
In hindsight I should have made sure that the Navara in front made it through first but he got stuck almost near the end of the soft sand and I had to swerve to go around and got stuck myself.
My Frontera had dug itself down and was sitting on it's fuel tank, trying to dig it out in 33 degree heat almost gave me a heart attack. With the help of another vehicle and a troopy load of backpackers we were on our way again.
The day just went from bad to worse but that's another story, one that would warrant a film called National Lampoons Queensland Vacation ops:2014 Black GXL D4D Auto with a few add ons.

Re: softest sand ya driven on
For me probably down the west coast of tassie on Sandy Cape beach. but its not your normal soft, its large patches of quicksand. We started off down the beach and hit a patch and got through then stopped to access the situation as we had to cross a small creek. It was like wlaking around on a trampoline and it you stay in one spot for more than a few seconds you just sink....
We were looking for the best way to proceed when we walked onto a hard patch in the knee deep water
It was the roof of a white cruiser....
We didn't go any further. Apparantly they lose about one vehicle a month in the sand

Sounds like I haven't really encountered soft sand yet... never been lower that 20psi and haven't been stuck. Guess that just means I'm not trying hard enough thenCheers, Leon

Re: softest sand ya driven on
you r right hutch, the top end of fraser can have some very soft stuff, as long as ya got your pressure low and another vehicle is also a good idea
but even the most well planned crews come to greifhad an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Re: softest sand ya driven on
Its a shame about that Trojan. It was a good place to go for a drive, and park in the river in summer, dangle the feet in the water and have a beer.2000 Toyota Prado GXL- Gone, but not forgotten...

It's actually possible to drive the whole way down to Strahan from Temma but at the Pieman river you have to drive approx. 100m into the salt water, then back in to avoid the huge ruts which have been made deeper by the tide flowing in and out. I've heard they are 6' in places. I've seen a vid of 2 defenders doing it with snatches attached to each other the whole time. If they'd hit a small spot of quicksand, you can almost guarantee out there you'd lose everything.
Quicksand isn't FUN 4WDing - it's plain scary.Cheers - Phil Taylor
